Water Use Exceeds Replenishment in Shafter-Wasco District
Karrer of the Bakersfield Bureau of Reclamation reports the Shafter-Wasco district uses about 107,580 acre feet of water annually on 33,500 irrigated acres, with only 52,100 acre feet replenished by underground flow from Kern River Poso Creek and seepage. He says Friant water cannot be stored underground and must be used on the surface, with stabilizing targets of 50 to 100 feet and shifts in distribution between canal and well water.
