High School Registration Set For September 8
Principal E. P. Jones announced high school registration will run September 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Teachers will assist students in selecting courses as classes begin September 11. A journalism class and a one year home economics graduation requirement for girls are planned, with gym classes to be offered in the new facilities. Enrollment is expected to rise from last year’s 280 opening students toward 300, as the term approaches.

Hukill Service Held for Victim of Mountain Crash
Funeral services were held yesterday at the Pentecostal Gospel Mission for George M. Hukill 39 who died after a Sunday automobile crash in the Santa Maria mountains. The accident occurred when a pickup plunged 75 feet off a cliff as brakes failed in the Reynolds car. Hukill had lived in Shafter 12 years and is survived by his wife Jewella and three brothers.

Grape Picking Progress in Shafter District Grape growers report steady harvest for Thompson seedless with raisin process underway
Thompson seedless grapes are being picked across the Shafter district with vines drying for raisins. Yields reach two to three tons of raisins per acre in many vineyards and green grapes at eight to twelve tons per acre. Some raisins have already been rolled at Mouser vineyard near the high school as weather moderates. Growers expect about one week for green grape drying, longer later, and raisin prices remain unsettled pending prorate negotiations and Sun Maid activity with government advances. Local sales go through Sun Maid or independent sellers across the valley.
