SHS hires new teachers and improves grounds
Shafter High School welcomed 12 new teachers and showcased campus improvements including a sidewalk on East Tulare near the football field and new asphalt near the Recreation & Parks office and Ag area. Principal Jaime Quinonez announced the work funded by the city and introduced new staff, with Kiwanis pledging further support.

Traffic safety drive in Shafter school zones
The Shafter Police Department will conduct two weeks of extra enforcement in school zones to curb speeding and unsafe loading. Citations will be issued for speeding, unsafe loading and failing to yield to pedestrians. For more information contact Chief John Zrofsky or Officer Robert Courtney at 746-6341.

Shafter annexes site near Lerdo Highway for industrial use
The Shafter City Council approved annexation of land once owned by Paramount Farms and later acquired by Minter Air Field District. Located west of Highway 99 just north of Lerdo Highway, the parcel is pre zoned industrial. City Manager John Guinn notes several promising projects are under consideration as the area becomes incorporated.

Shafter Youth Council opens alternate seat at police dept
Following a resignation, an opening exists on the Shafter Youth Council. Applications are available at the Shafter Police Department, with the selection process mirroring the original method including interviews and city council approval. The August 23 2001 meeting reduced sessions to once monthly, with the next meeting in September and a September 12 15 state convention in Sacramento to involve youth councils statewide.

Cris Starrh directed the Disney play Beauty and the Beast in the newly named auditorium. Lesley Ogle, a Shafter High freshman, starred as Belle in her final Children's Theatre performance. The production drew a large audience as Starrh emphasized the honor of opening the new space.
