Richland Principal Kathy Mayes describes Arena Day as a long standing annual tradition that helps prepare students for the new year by letting them meet homeroom, update immunization records, and resolve scheduling issues. Eighth grader Alan Perez, 13, aims for at least a 3.5 GPA.
A series of community activities invites participation and support for youth programs. Destini assists with orders for fundraising. The Shafter Healthy Start hosts a monthly meeting August 20 from 4 to 5 PM at Redwood Elementary School cafeteria with guests from Kern County Network for Children and human resources. Teen Challenge hosts its third annual Full Throttle for Kids Motorcycle Run Show September 6 at 650 Riverside Street. Senior Olympics of Kern County is set for October 3 at Rosewood Retirement Community with registration online or by calling Sharon Varner.
The American Legion 865 hosts a public meeting on August 21 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion office. Westley Jones, director of the National Cemetery, will be featured as the speaker.
Park rangers responded to a Kern River rescue near CALM on August nine. Raymond Rojas held Elise Rojas, three, in a tube while Raul, Carmen, Lorena Villafanr, and others clung to a tree limb. A rope bag and a human chain saved the child and other victims. Victims were staying at Kern River County Park campsite in Azusa and Pasadena, California.
