Growth Trend in Kern County Discussed by Board of Trade
The Kern County market oriented industries show employment fluctuations with construction, transportation, utilities, trade, finance, insurance, real estate, and services. Despite slower growth since 1950 tied to agriculture and mining declines, absolute industry size rose since 1940s, led by a postwar expansion. Retail sales grew from 59 million in 1939 to 450.8 million in 1962, with local per capita sales above state average due to tourism and cross-county trade, despite lower per capita income.
