The Minter post office begins operations in a grocery store in Minter Village under general clerk Oscar Green with Eunice Douglas as clerk in charge. In opening week the station served about 10 people per hour, mainly selling stamps while offering all first class services except government bond sales.
Local softball stars host Superior Oil from Bakersfield in an 8 30 p m exhibition game at Richland Primary diamond to honor trophies and caps for Pee Wee Junior Girls and Men’s leagues. The Shafter Branch of Kern County Library announces 47 new adult books and 35 new children's titles. A notable non fiction volume, Information Almanac 1948, compiled by Iole Kiernan, appears in the collection. A librarian on vacation resumes Story Hour for children today, with sessions continuing until school starts.
A birthday notice salutes Mrs. J. A. Bond on August 15 and extends related wishes to Reatha Bond who celebrates on August 8.
John Miller of Wasco develops a potato drying device to convert surplus potatoes into dairy feed and potential by products. A belt driven carrier processes spuds on a test field, claiming minimal odor and insects with a five minute drying time, and patent application has been filed.
Floyd Cooper of Cooper's Nursery underwent surgery Thursday afternoon at Bakersfield Hospital for removal of a head tumor. Cooper reports he is recovering well and will likely go home this week.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce unanimously endorsed adopting civil service for the police department at itsFriday meeting. They noted council approval remains required and that the 3 member civil service board acts only in advisory capacity. The group also voted against sending a representative to Bakersfield for the Delano Wine Harvest Festival and planned a meeting at Shafter Paint Store to finalize a shared multiple purpose float for Taft Delano and Bakersfield parades.
Rio Bravo trustees clerk P L Bergen said work on a new addition to Rio Bravo school will start in a week. Crews-Weld and Fisher won a $264 215 contract to build an auditorium cafeteria five classrooms and a kindergarten unit adjoining the south end of the present structure. The project aims for 180 working days completion with an auditorium seating 421 and a cafeteria for 80 at a time.
Wasco Justice of the Peace Arch R. Beckes suffered a stroke on August 8 during a steak bake at Cormack Park after a three month battle with paralysis. He is a popular local figure with many friends.
A Friday night water gala at the Richland Aquatic Center winds up the summer program with diving exhibitions and swimming races. Local youths and Bakersfield stars will perform along with comedy diving. Admission is free, and signups close Thursday with Roy Farrell coordinating.
Ralph Reed, 26, of Shafter, suffers first and second degree burns from a Paloma oil field flash fire near Buena Vista Lake on August 8. Six men worked at rig No. 56 unloading sacks when a gas ignition caused the blaze. Reed survived while Joseph Vett was fatally burned. Others hurt include Arlis Roberts, Robert Latta, Gilbert Garland, and Glen Anderson. an inquest followed with witnesses from Shafter, Wasco, Oildale, and Lost Hills.
The Friday session at the Aquatic Center featured outstanding diving led by Kenny Melvin who dominated the boys and young men over 16. Kern County shipped 32,800 cars of potatoes this season, up 1,300 from last year despite 13,000 more acres harvested as yields declined. Digging finished in Bowles and Madera districts and starts on about 7,000 acres in the Delta. California cotton acreage hits a record 810,000 acres, up from 536,000 in 1947.
The Shafterites depart for a vacation together with Mrs. Ed Nickel joining the group. The event highlights local social circles and community hospitality in a brief society note.
Hitchcock's Auto Parts edged Wasco Ter mites 3-2 to win the men's loop title in a billed city rivalry. Hitchcock's collected 4 hits with walks and smart baserunning to score 3 runs while Wasco Termites had 6 hits but only 2 runs.
The Adamson Trucking softball team, second in local Junior League and second-half champs, spent a weekend at Pismo Beach with manager Blackie Waymire and Steve Cattell. They fished deep sea, swam, and BBQed on Avila Beach. Some players were affected on the fishing boat. Members included Roddy Andrews, Ninsley, Smith, Russel, Saem, and Laughlin.
Gordon to spend a week at the Vignolo cabin in Manhattan Beach starting Sunday as a seaside retreat.
