The Shafter Public Utility district sees a 76460 rise in assessed value to 497790 for 1939 40 as reported by county auditor S A Woody. Building activity and year end improvements boosted the total. tax rate will be set in September after district obligations are reviewed.
Shafter city council sits as a board of equalization at city hall to rectify assessor returns on property within the city. Sessions run nightly through this week with a final sitting at 8 oclock unless protests arise. A. R. Duehren discussed his assessment. clerk Frank Shaw will compare figures with the county assessor. Mayor Channeson and Councilmen Lachenmaier Nay Midgley and Fair attend.
Walks poured along Lerdo road and at Shafter School grounds as the city sidewalk program progresses. Beth Eden street grading prepares for curb pour on Schnaidt street. Crews plan to finish west side of Shafter highway before September school start and then move to Santa Fe way for curbs and walks before state improvements.
Monday afternoon a local fire truck and crew responded to an alarm at Seventh Standard road near the Santa Fe crossing where a small grass patch burned. The fire was reported at approximately 5 55.
Principal E P Jones announced a complete modernization of Shafter high school auditorium with Marco pivot track curtains and motorized drops. R L Grosh Studios of Hollywood will supply installation and materials for 2200 dollars.
A 110 degree reading at the Shafter experiment farm ties the season high set on July 22 and 24. The next day the mercury fell to 107, then 105 by 3 pm. Other highs include 108 on Sunday and 99 on Thursday with a weekly tabulation showing varied temperatures across days.
After city hall complaints, Chief Murray Arnold warns that bicycles and motor scooters ridden on sidewalks will be confiscated. Violators may redeem wheels only by parents. The rule applies to messengers, and youths have been warned previously.
Potato Products company announces contracts for alfalfa grown this year to local farmers. John Rust says U S No 1 leafy alfalfa must be delivered fresh for dehydration with delivery options by growers or company equipment.
A traveling chest clinic held at Richland school and nearby sites performed 219 exams this week including 144 X rays and 75 skin tests for tuberculosis. At the Mexican colony 107 X rays and 100 skin tests were administered, and at the county camp 53 X rays and 25 skin tests. Educational movie attendance totaled about 250 at Richland, 165 at Mexican colony, and 89 at the county camp. The unit, built on a dark room, travels countywide under the California State county health department and has now logged 1,207 X rays in Kern County.
A group of Mennonite Brethren church youth will attend a conference at the county camp on Greenhorn mountain from August 20 to August 26.
Shafter volunteer fire department accepted Leonard Gaede's resignation as a regular member at a meeting held at the American Legion hall. Bob Zenk was appointed to fill the vacancy and five new social members plus one special member were approved pending city council consent. A drill is planned for 7 o'clock next Wednesday evening.
John Rust of Potato Products Co reports the potato dehydration project operated experimentally this season. He will decide on next season plans in about three months, noting need for more equipment, odor control, and waste disposal. About 15 tons daily output at peak with a 10 to 1 potato feed to finished product ratio. Poultry industry uses the feed as a fattener. price varies with feed market.
The Shafter Kiwanis met yesterday at Cafe Neuman with speakers from Bakersfield and local clubs including Ed Rose Ben Stinson John W Doughty Jr and Dr Jack Lighthill. Carl Teget chaired as plans were made for an open air ladies night before September first and a district convention in Oakland in October was discussed.
Lerdo district Thompson Seedless grape shipments by rail reach 34 cars this month with additional truck transport to the table market. Seven cars of Malagas and one car of Ribiers have also left, along with two cars of sweet potatoes. The potato season is expected to continue.
Associate in entomology Gordon Smith conducts a long term study of the cotton dauber Lygus hesperus at an experimental farm north of town. Since 1935 he has recorded the insect’s impact on blossoms and bolls, using cloth sacks to compare injured and healthy plant parts for farmers in the district.
Shafter Business Men's Association heard that directional and distance signs will be placed on Belridge Road within about 60 days. Laurence Baughman said the committee secured Bakersfield club officials’ assurance of a survey and sign placement at Lerdo Road intersection and other key points. A Hanford chamber letter supported speeding Shafter Corcoran road improvements to create a shorter west side route to the northern San Joaquin valley.
No activity has started since a sump was completed last week at the Wilshire Oil Company Campen No 1 location in section 1 29 25. The site lies about one mile south of the southern boundary of the Shafter Oil field and about one mile north of General Petroleum's Sullivan No 3.
Postmaster Lois L. Berry reports steady Shafter post office growth since 1934 with 1938 receipts excluding money orders at 15 356 35. Money orders total about 33 000 for the quarter ending March 1 1938, vs nearly 35 000 for the same quarter in 1939. Office moved in June 1937. boxes rose from 237 to 673. Staff increased from 2 to 4 clerks plus substitutes. Fiscal year 1938 39 saw 1 105 registered local ice 1 572 insured and 60 air mail registrations. Rural boxes rose from 203 to 347. Office elevated to second class on July 1 1938.
In rec league action Belridge defeated Shafter Juniors 6 to 5 while the Hi Y club beat Mexican Colony 9 to 5. Tonight the Juniors meet Rio Bravo at 8 PM on the local diamond and tomorrow evening Director J V Wilson plans a game between a league team and an outside club.
Union Oil brought in its 10-34 well in the Shafter field with early reports of 1876 barrels per day through a 20-64 inch choke and 2,240,000 cubic feet gas. The well bottoms at 11,505 feet, Vedder sand at 11,288 feet, and is seen as a potential northwestern field boundary. Drilling began 57 days after start, with Union planning 11-34 in Section 34 28-28 to commence soon.
A Kern county junior chamber caravan led by President A. G. Hardy will travel from Bakersfield to Mount Abel County Park next Sunday to promote winter sports development. The group will meet in Taft with 1 p.m. luncheon at the camp next month, sponsored by the Taft Condor club and Taft Moose lodge. The campaign aims to draw entrants statewide and features community dances for both minors and adults.
Watermelon shipments from the district are practically finished, announced this week by agricultural inspector Jack Hare. Local growers named include W. H. Hitchcock J. P. Whewer Charles Burns and the Shafter Farms company.
