Shafter rescinds election change and plans volunteer effort
Shafter city council rescinded a proposal to put on the November ballot a change to make city clerk and treasurer appointive rather than elected. Officials cited voter confusion and noted the measure might centralize power in the city manager. The decision followed debate and concerns about public understanding. Public and faith leaders discussed a community service program involving pastors and a police chaplain to assist on calls and provide counseling, with a pilot to start after setup. The council also reviewed RTC hiring updates and approved applying for Kern Cog funding to improve sidewalks on Lerdo Highway and Sierra Street.

Possible reprieve for education program
The Legislature may override parts of Gov. Deukmejian’s veto on the education budget, potentially boosting general funds for schools. Richland-Lerdo acting superintendent George Wolters says a workshop in Sacramento outlined impacts and potential cuts to SIP and EIA funding, with special education and mental health budgets at risk. A new curriculum appointment for Chris Frazier was discussed, expanding the director role and aligning with bilingual education and staff development. The board approved a discrimination settlement with Julia Escalante, prompting a district policy resubmission to employees to reiterate non discrimination.
