Four days on four days off, 24 hours a day, the Shafter in a small county fire station, men on alert for fires and prevention. Capt. T. L. Kin explains the dry season planning keeps [the] crew at the station, drills, education tours, maps, and rest on the veranda between calls.
City Clerk F G Shaw reports Shafter issued two large construction permits in July totaling 32150. A sausage factory on State street is estimated at 17000 by contractor George Vannatta, and a new Sunday school building for the Mennonite Brethren Church is estimated at 13750.
Union Congregational Church plans a brick building housing sanctuary fellowship hall kitchen classrooms and ethics wing on Sycamore and Tulare streets. Groundbreaking set for August 20 with Rev T F Rutledge Beale of Billings Mont as guest preacher and Rev Elmer J Windisch of Wasco assisting. Architect is Harry L. Pierce of Los Angeles and contractor George Vannatta.
The Production and Marketing Administration and county committee announce that CCC price support loans on the 1949 cotton crop will have a new maturity date of September 30, 1950, extending the period for producers to redeem or sell their loaned cotton. Loans outstanding on October 1, 1950 will be pooled by CCC for producer accounts.
The county clerk in Bakersfield cautions Shafter voters to verify their name on the qualified electorate roll. Registration is being checked for accurate mailing addresses. If a voter’s card is lost, notify Shafter City Hall to clarify the situation.
The Richland School Board approves an 841760 budget with 350000 carryover and plans bids for electrical distribution at Richland Elementary and oil system revisions at Lerdo Primary. Operating expenses total 366760, buildings 415000, with a new auditorium seating 1500 and multiple improvements across the district.
H W Pat Kelly a Shafter candidate for the state assembly has a packed two week schedule. He spoke to the Lions Club of Oildale on Building Bridges of Understanding and addressed the 20 30 Club of Delano on Positive You for Youth. Next week he attends Rotary district 158 assembly in Monterey from the 15th to 18th where he will discuss Youth Service and moderate two group discussions.
Shafter swimmers Verna Peters, Loretta Bender, and Bruce Muir earned top finishes at Bakersfield in Kern county swimming contests and qualified for the San Joaquin Valley Championships in Fresno on August 19 20. Other Shafter competitors included Dick Kirkham Carl Hollin Mike Brown Ronnie Siemens and Joyce McDonald.
Prof Anthony Calindro of the Evangelical Biblical Institute of Italy will address a public meeting at First Baptist Church Monday night at 8 p m. The Rev Bernard Andrews reports a large attendance expected as followers gather.
Shafter Wasco Irrigation District leaders praised a cheaper method to deliver Friant Kern Canal water, while T R Thompson of the Bureau of Reclamation outlined the Central Valley Project’s broad local and national impacts. He showed a 104 foot underground water drop at a Shafter Wasco area well from 1921 to 1949 and noted a proposed contract for about 70 000 acre feet yearly with seepage aiding groundwater.
Edwin W. Wilson, 27, of Hanford, joins the Ohaneson and Mor timore firm in Shafter as a newly admitted California State Bar member. A Hastings College of Law graduate and UC alum, he is a Navy veteran with submarine patrol and air sea rescue service in the Atlantic theater. His father serves as Hanford city judge.
A three way tie for first forms after North Camp upsets Buttonwillow 7 to 5 in junior league action. Tonight at 6 30 p m Stringham Brown and Bryant meet at the high school diamond to decide the league title. Contenders for next week are Tupman Buttonwillow and North Camp.
Vernon Pierce of Shafter heads the newly organized Civilian Air Patrol and promotes membership among Kern County pilots. The CAP meeting is August 17 at the Kern County Airport pilots association building. Business includes installing radio gear for emergency use and wartime comms disruption drills. Members volunteer and may include radio savvy flyers, but war service exemption does not apply.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce directors studied a grade crossing to link the business and residential areas split by the Santa Fe line. They expect Santa Fe Railroad help and an engineer study while funding plans are not yet decided. Fire response and potato season congestion emerged as key justifications.
Police Chief John Reily will organize civilian defense units in Shafter within ten days. About 500 countywide volunteers are expected under Sheriff John E. Loustalot. Horace P. Grayson Bakersfield police chief was elected county coordinator for the mutual aid plan forming Kern zone 6 with neighboring counties.
H L Pomeroy of Bakersfield was re-elected president of the California Planting Cotton Seed Distributors at Tulare. L W Frick Arvin was named vice president and L B Nourse Bakersfield was reappointed as manager secretary and treasurer. Directors include Frick Buerkle Fairfax and Floyd Nelson Matera. The group reported 196 members 18 000 tons seeded on 615 000 acres with 1 750 000 in seed sales. The A4 42 cotton is in demand and none remains in government loan.
Shafter and Richland schools plan a fall term starting September 11. Total enrollment expected at 2250 with 550 at Shafter High including 192 freshmen and 150 sophomores, juniors 112 and seniors 100. Richland School will host about 1700 students. 66 teachers planned for both campuses, two new staff members, and a school nurse. Pre-registration runs September 8–9. class days begin September 11.
Sgt. Donald E Knowles, a Navy veteran and current KWSO announcer technician from Oregon, received orders sending him to active Air Force duty. He will report August 15 at Portland Air Base after living in Shafter since May. He served two years in the South Pacific as a third class petty officer. He is 23 and unmarried.
Mechanical failures at the Richland aquatic center led to the cancellation of the annual carnival. Pumps feeding water to three pools broke down and were not repaired in time. Recreation swimming will be allowed, but the youth show and ballet numbers cannot proceed. Prizes and Red Cross certificates planned for the event were also affected.
