At Wits End by ERMA BOM BECK
A humor piece follows Erma Bombeck as she watches a sewing store scene and overhears a suburban family talk. The narrator and husband discuss their son moving out and fears about dangers, while a child sales assistant helps with patterns and fabric details. The writing captures February idleness and domestic anxiety with wry, observant humor.

Shafter adobe history as museum to family home
The Shafter adobe on 528 and 530 Acacia Street changed hands and purposes from a planned H shaped building to a residence and museum space. Frank Latta built a studio and Indian artifact gallery, later moved to the Kern County Museum. Lowell and Mary Todd converted it into a home, adding modern windows and plaster after the 1952 earthquake. Current owners Ronald and Mary Johnson bought it in 1974. A follow up will identify other adobes in Shafter. Also Cal Poly San Luis Obispo named over 1,500 dean’s list students for Spring Quarter 1978, including Jack Colvard Jr. of Shafter and Tony Andreotti of Buttonwillow. Shafter High School weight room hours set for August 7–18.
