An urgent call for more volunteers for the local listening post was issued by the Shafter Civilian Defense Council. Due to shortages, volunteers have shifted to eight hour duties from four, and more help is requested to support war effort and community cooperation.
Albert J. Zitfimerman and Martha Goertzen were married yesterday at the home of Mrs. Emma Scott in Lodi. The couple are honeymooning in San Francisco and the bay area.
A letter from E F Kennett potato seed grower from Wer road Minnesota notes harsh weather hurt potato growers in Minnesota. He cites 1941 rainouts, 1942 a good crop lost in August, and 1943 delayed planting with hope for fall favorable conditions. Gas rationing may keep him from visiting Shafter.
Dr and Mrs Lawrence Mc Grane depart for a month long vacation with plans to visit Santa Barbara and Long Beach amid bond buying.
Shafter residents may bring scrap such as rubber rags or burlap to the community pile beside the General Petroleum yard over the next two weeks. Proceeds fund the local listening post, maintained by salvage funds. tin, car bodies, and wire are not requested this time.
Funeral services for T F Bell were held last Saturday at 10 A M at Jamzen Central Chapel with Rev Sam Wilcoxen. Burial followed at Shafter Cemetery. Bell, of Shafter and Corcoran ranching interests, died Monday July 26 at Hanford Hospital. He is survived by his widow Lillie Bell a son Milton Bell stepchildren and a brother.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall with Mrs. J. B. Henderson presiding. The group reported sales of war stamps and bonds in June in the business district brought in $739.60. Mrs. George Enns served as acting secretary during the absence of the regular secretary Mrs. Glenn Nay. Hostesses Mesdames Taylor Tabbs and Bert Hebel served refreshments during the social hour.
Koleta Osborn, five years with the Post Office, will join Superior Oil Co in the nearby field. She plans a two week vacation around San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles before starting her new job.
The Shafter Press in Shafter California receives thanks from Frank Reynolds Post No 26 for public cooperation in a drive collecting records razors crutches jewelry silk and other items. The note credits the community with making the drive a marked success and expresses sincere appreciation from Commander F S Wheeler and Chairman Frank V Harrison.
Geo Osterkamp, local representative for Vick's, told Shafter Rotary Club that Shafter is the ideal mint region and the company aims to expand to 10 000 acres. He noted two-crop per year yields, flood irrigation, and that mint roots persist after plowing. The talk was at Cafe Neuman with W F H serving as chaff sheriff and Neil Huffsmith presiding.
Shc ier Women at the Kern County Federation of Women's Clubs held a Tuesday meeting at Hotel El Tejon Bakersfield to elect a new president after Merle Taylor moved to Tulare county. R. Jackson was elected president. Kernville led with full attendance of its 22 members as guest speaker Mrs. Frank Gregory spoke and the theme for the coming year focused on the end of the war.
The Mollie Pitcher Stamp Sale will occur in Shafter on Saturday with the American Legion auxiliary running a stand in the business district from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Under the direction of Auxiliary President Mrs J B Henderson the event promotes bonds and stamps for a national celebration.
Mr and Mrs G D Prather of Wasco took their son Charles Christopher on a Sunday outing to Greenhorn Mountain. The trip brought a pleasant family excursion with no incidents reported.

Mrs. Ted Suess of Lodi visits in Shafter at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Chris Hendel. The Suess family lost a thirteen year old son in Lodi on July 24th. Many friends and relatives from Shafter attend the funeral.
Mr and Mrs Ed Kerschenman and Mrs Emma Spitzer visited the Marvin Bender home at Edison over last Sunday.
Mrs Jacob Voth and relatives learned of missionary J H Voth death in Tulsa. Rev Voth served in India for nearly 35 years and was buried at Mt Lake Minnesota. The report notes illness since last October and a church attendance last Sunday. Also mentions Mrs Erma McCoy returning from vacation and Abe Hodels visiting Shafter with Mrs Hodel staying a few days.

Harriet Foust has been discharged from San Joaquin Hospital Bakersfield after an appendicitis operation and is recuperating at her mother Mrs Sarah G Foust home.
Shafter Kiwanis Club members discussed a district Kiwanis International meeting to be held in Santa Cruz in October. President Herb Schirmer shared wartime travel experiences including crowded Washington scenes and tipping five porters. Paul Newell, Kern County Salvage Committee chair, praised local salvage efforts and stressed urgency of ongoing fat salvage activities.
Mr and Mrs Merwin Hurt with Mrs Estiline Reynolds of Bakersfield travel to Riverside for a weekend visit with relatives. Returning they are joined by Mrs Maud Strickland and granddaughter who have been vacationing there. They visited Lawrence Rothman former manager of Justesen s store in Shafter who is recuperating at the Marine Base hospital from service injuries. Rothman expressed thanks for letters from Shafter friends. The Schirmers called Washington a mad house and New York near as bad, noting their visit to Radio City and a 15 000 seat movie theater.
Shafter Boy Scout Troop 53 sponsored by Shafter Rotary Club and their brothers attended a swimming party and watermelon feed Wednesday evening at the J C Chanesson pool. Scoutmaster Marion S. Crockett organized the gathering and sent invitations to all scouts and their brothers.
Shafter Mennonite Brotherhood church will hold daily vacation Bible school starting August 16 from 8 a.m. to noon. Officials report an excellent teaching staff and praise the event as the finest in the church's history. Transportation help for those without means to attend is available by notifying the church.
