Funeral Services For Local Farmer In Shafter

Funeral services were held July 28 at 2 00 p m at First Baptist Church for Char le O Burton 56 of 741 South Shafter died July 26 in Bakersfield hospital Rev Menno Schellenberg officiated and interment followed in Shafter cemetery He was a native of Rocky Arkansas and a farmer He is survived by his widow Ira Burton of Shafter one son Charles J Burton of New York two daughters Murial Darrow Doris Sorrels both of Oklahoma two brothers H W Burton Bakersfield B T Burton Oklahoma three sisters Irene McDaniel Flora Fealy Florence Alden all of Oklahoma and six grandchildren Armstrong Mortuary was in charge of arrangements

Man jailed for drunk driving after failing to pay fine

Walter pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in Shafter on July 30. He was arrested by Patrolman Glenn Holt after his car jumped the curb and he remained jailed this week for failing to pay a $150 fine.

Association Requests CV Highway Relocation

Clifton Clemens, president of the Central Valley Highway association, asks the California Highway Commission to study relocating the Central Valley Highway. County Plans Park Improvements In Shafter Area

The Shafter Recreation Commission announces county plans for a 1956 57 project at the county park beside Richland Primary School. A large concrete slab for roller skating and play is approved, with long range ideas for a tot park featuring climbing steps and jungle bars for kindergarten children.

Graveside funeral services were held July 31 at 10:00 a.m. at Shafter Cemetery for Ralph Lee Shamblin 84 of 384 Terra Vista Bakersfield Rev J K Isaac officiated and interment followed. Failure to Pay Fine Brings Arrest

John Walters, 31, of South Shafter, was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to pay a drunk driving fine issued about a year ago. Walters was tracked by Sgt. Claude Mite and sentenced to 82 days in the county jail.

At 9 19 p m a false alarm reported a tree touching a hot wire near Lerdo and Poplar. Pacific Gas and Electric Co was contacted.

Recreation Commission Plans Sanctioned Baseball in 1957

The Shafter Recreation Commission moved to explore creating a formal baseball league for 1957 following a delegation of local enthusiasts. President Dc Jack Manweiler appointed a committee to assess need and setup, proposing a trial league for boys around ninth grade to transition from softball to hardball. The push comes as the summer softball program served 450 participants across four leagues with one girls league.

Guest of Navy Sails as Private Visitor to USS Bon Homme Richard

Peter Channeson of Shafter was invited by the Secretary of the Navy to join a cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard. The ship, under Captain La Mar P. Carver, departed Alameda for a photography friendly voyage with close screening of civilians. Channeson boarded July 30 and was welcome to document naval operations with his camera.
