Paul Newell argues the 80th Congress failed on housing and universal military training but made a few historic moves. He says conservatives stabilizing government prevent liberal excess, guarding individual rights, with organized labor and social security needing restraint to avoid tyranny and idleness.
Housing Authority of the County of Kern advances a veterans housing project at Minter Field converting hundreds of units. State funds cover 90 percent with the county covering 10 percent. Original request of 642 820 for 401 units trimmed to 525 000 to fit revised financing. Architects revise plans expected to complete in days. Bids then opened and a single general contractor to oversee multiple subs.

Word has reached of the sudden death Tuesday July 29 of Mrs. Clara Dequine Klages 35 a former Shafter Wasco resident She attended Kern County schools Wasco High Santa Barbara State Teachers College UCLA taught at Poplar School near Shafter She was granddaughter of pioneer Rio Bravo Dequine family Survived by husband Ward Klages son Kevin of Burbank sister Gladys Dequine Kniffen Bakersfield aunts Ethel Dequine Los Angeles Gladys Johnson Los Angeles Uncle Bob Dequine Los Angeles.
The Kempey Recreational Commission operates the former Minter Field pool for Shafter Wasco and McFarland youths. Ages 8 to 18 swim daily with county lifeguards including Roy Farrell guiding Shafter sessions. Pool hours 1 to 3 p m weekdays with bus transport from Richland at 12 45 p m and a Friday 6 to 8 p m and Sunday 2 to 8 p m schedule. The program ends August 15 marking two weeks left for participation and daily diving exhibitions occur.

Tonight Shafter hosts a teen age dance at the Woman's Club House featuring a 10 piece Bob Houston orchestra. Sponsored by the Wednesday Afternoon Club and the American Legion with fancy door prizes and refreshments. The Kern county known band will play for dancing and a local girl vocalist will perform. Hundreds of dancers from Shafter and nearby communities are expected. This marks the first time a regular dance band plays for the event after prior teen dances on alternate weeks.
A Tuesday dawn blaze at the Bailey Store in Bailey caused about $6,000 in damage. Firefighters from Shafter and Wasco kept the flames within the interior after being alerted by C L Smith at 2 28 a m. A Bakersfield unit was summoned but not needed as water shortages challenged containment.
L T Bud Obele Kern Furniture Co manager was in a collision at the Minter Field gate on Lerdo highway. He suffered a severely lacerated leg and other injuries while a truck tenant, Tony Vega of Wasco, was badly hurt. Both were treated at Kern General Hospital and released. Other Mexican nationals in the large truck were briefly described as Wasco travelers.
Six new teachers join Shafter High School this semester. Sophia Derbyshire will teach English public speaking and dramatics. Joseph Bruner, former pastor of Shafter Baptist Church, teaches English. Richard Heber handles Mathematics and physical education as assistant coach. Jeune Stiegelmeyer covers home economics. Edward Schacht teaches shop. Gwenyth Parker leads girls physical education. Four teachers from last year will not return: Barbara Lee Ray Kitts Burton Filut and Violet Brughelli.
The City Council in a special session at City Hall heard a petition from Stone tract residents to open an alley between Lerdo and Beth Eden. Ordinance No. 65 was introduced to authorize the annexation of Kirschenmann Tract No. 2 to Shafter. Council members Frizzell McClure and Kirschenmann attended.
The Shafter summer recreation program arts and crafts division closes this week after a successful season. Daily attendance averaged eighty to ninety children, with many astonishing projects by the younger participants. The program credits two instructors for much of its success.
