California Farm Employment Up Demand Increases for Help
California farm employment rises toward the spring peak with higher demand for all types of labor. May 10 employment was about two percent above last year, but statewide shortages grew to 3400 workers. Strawberry pickers face the sharpest shortage, with 16 000 needed at peak, citrus harvest short by 700, and June needs rising by 4500. Labor demand spans vegetables, cotton chopping, thinning, and fruit harvests. The Coast Guard Air Station handles air sea rescue duties from San Francisco.
