Shafter plans back design guidelines vote due to conflicts
After a public hearing on Downtown Parking and Business Improvement District guidelines, three planning commissioners faced conflict of interest, triggering a back to DPBIA vote. Wiedmann drew the voting straw. Powell and Hair abstained. DPBIA and city officials urged enforceable, interior-sensitive guidelines to improve downtown appearance. Also recommended rural subdivision standards allowing curb and sidewalk waivers for large lots with future upgrades.

Pest control measures to curb disease spread urged
Leon M. Hebertson M D director of Public Health Services urges action as warmer weather arrives to control flies and mosquitoes. Emphasizes reducing breeding sites over killing adults and details steps: remove standing water, cover water containers, keep garbage cans clean and collected weekly, manage grass clippings, pick up animal droppings, dispose of fallen fruit and vegetables, and use insecticides only as a supplement. A fly swatter can handle light indoor infestations.
