Seven talented youths in Shafter form the town’s sole county breakdancing group led by Bernard Lopez known as Captain Funk. The team practices daily at Stringham Park’s band shell, learning moves like popping and windmill, with ages 12 to 16, under rigorous hours and occasional bumps and bruises as they chase contests and exhibitions.
The article notes boys practice three to four hours daily on cardboard over cement in a town pavilion. They glide and spin, with Lopez backing the project as a sponsor due to his love of music and the group’s bond with kids despite pads and pain.
Lopez leads seven members of the Smalltown Breakdancers as they train for upcoming dance contests in Bakersfield with cash prizes. The group aims to perform as an ensemble, with each boy mastering a specialty while girls practice Smurfing. Lopez plans public appearances late in April and envisions extra exercise and self defense classes to broaden participation.
