Kern County Science Fair Winners Shine At Bakersfield
The 12th annual Science Fair at the Bakersfield Convention Center on April 15, 1999, drew over 500 entries from more than 100 schools. Shafter's Richland Junior High students Alice Grainger and Angie Wiedmann earned second place in Materials Science and Pharmacology Toxicology respectively, while Caitlin Butterfield and Johnathon Smith of Northern Christian School won first place in Electricity Electronics and Plant Biology. Navy Marine Corps Distinguished Achievement Awards were presented to several Kern County high school students.

Local girl wins big at Pacific Coast Junior Livestock Show
Shannon Ballenger of Shafter swept Bakersfield events from March 26 to 28. She won 10 of 13 Friday and Saturday Jumping, Barrels, Poles, Western Riding, and Equitation classes, plus four Versatility classes on Sunday. She earned four buckles, two jackets, and a horse blanket as Hi-Point English, Hi-Point Western, Hi-Point All Around and Versatility Champion.
