In Shafter and Wasco district court proceedings, Jerry Mayhew 21 of Shafter pled not guilty to public intoxication and disturbing the peace with a pre trial conference set for April 28 1982. Billy McGowen 58 of Shafter pled not guilty to DUI with prior conviction and a pre trial conference set for May 10 1982. Ray Stracener 34 of Tupman pled not guilty to public intoxication and fighting in public with a pre trial conference April 28 1982. Herbert Rock 60 of Bakersfield and Phillip Rock 32 of Bakersfield pled guilty to unlawful use of a suction dredge with three year terms and Rock fined 300 dollars and two years probation. dredge ordered confiscated. Raymond Nieto 51 of Shafter pled guilty to DUI and driving without a license with a 565 dollar fine and three years probation plus traffic school. Tragic Easter Weekend Auto Crashes Claim Shafter Residents
A number of Shafter residents died in Easter weekend auto accidents near Porterville and on the Kern County highways. Jack Henry Ashmore Sr. and his son Michael Glen Ashmore died from drowning after a fishing trip collision. A Shafter man remains in stable condition at Kern Medical Center as two others perished in a late Saturday head-on crash that killed three more people. Carlos Marino Dominguez, 22, was involved in the final incident as authorities sort details of the northbound and southbound vehicle positions.

Last Thursday a candidate forum for Shafter City Council was co sponsored by the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and the Shafter Woman's Club with seven candidates present.
