The Shafter Parks and Recreation District lists 2011 season registration from April 4 to May 6 with season start May 23. Call 746-3303 or visit shafterrecreation.org for details. The Church of Christ offers a free weekly soup dinner each Thursday 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Volunteers are sought for the May 14 Fly-In pancake breakfast at Minter Field Air Museum. visitors can join Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Angel Food Shafter becomes host site for Angel Food Ministries, a nonprofit offering food assistance.
Geoffrey Taylor reports Wasco and Shafter high schools joined in a weekend Relay for Life event at Wasco High School to honor cancer survivors and remember the fallen. About 34 teams and 500 participants aimed to raise roughly 110000 dollars, up from 107900 last year, as rivalries faded for a common cause. Evelyn Guevara and Connie Maldonado emphasized unity and remembrance while KGET’s Kiyoshi Tomono hosted opening ceremonies.
A home on Shafter Avenue near Riverside Street was destroyed by a fire on Tuesday April 5 displacing a local family of five. Firefighters from Kern County Fire Department responded with eleven personnel and contained the blaze to the room of origin and attic with no injuries reported. The damage is estimated at 45000 dollars and the cause is undetermined.
Bakersfield resident Samy Mikhael Samweel Kaldas, 30, was killed Friday morning at Burbank Street and Cherry Avenue near Shafter when his vehicle collided with an oncoming truck. CHP says his vehicle may have run a stop sign or pulled into the path of the other vehicle. the other driver sustained minor injuries.
