Delano's Filipino heritage marimba band, organized by the Rotary Club and led by Chester Hayden, showcases high school students who learned by ear and perform melodies described as extraordinary. The piece praises the group and their community support in Delano.

Shafter starts a $600 Cancer Fund Drive with campaign chair Merwin Schirmer distributing cans in the business district. The American Cancer Society campaign runs April as cancer month, supported by Kern County volunteers and a Kern County committee led by Glenn E. Stanfield. Sheriff John E. Loustalot chairs outer areas.
Eight semi-finalists chosen from Monday night contests on KERO will perform in three broadcasts on April 12 19 and 26 at 9 30 pm from Standard School auditorium Nancy Ralph violinist and Doris Cornell pianist will perform April 12. Final judges pick two winners who will appear with the Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus on May 3. The top finalist receives a Aerosonic Spinet piano grand prize donated by Fred Gutcher of Bakersfield.
In Merced County 25 000 acres of dry farm wheat have not yet sprouted due to the ongoing drouth affecting crop emergence and early growth.
Shafter faces bi annual council race with five announced contenders for three seats. Mayor Joe Frizzell and Councilman William Lachnmaier will not seek re election while Glenn Nay runs again alongside Earl Johnson Dan Loewen Robert McClain and Frank Russell. Californian native Earl Johnson born Visalia November 27 1899 moved to Dinuba as a youth attended schools and Stanford briefly. Navy veteran of WWI. Ran a Dinuba dry goods store 1922 1939 then started Johnson Schaaf in Shafter 1940 and Johnson Neuman 1941. Active in Shafter Chamber civic groups Legion Rotary and Masonic Lodge.
Glenn O. Nay, elected to Shafter’s first city council in 1938, remains a central figure in local governance. He chairs the Shafter Public Utility District board, serves on the 15th District Agriculture Association, and holds membership in local civic groups. Nay’s background spans farming education, military service, and long tenure in Shafter high school agriculture.
Dan Loewen arrived in Shafter in fall 1936 and started a plumbing business with a new plumbing and electrical supply store. He runs a large shop serving residential and commercial work and is active in the Kiwanis club and Chamber of Commerce. Loewen served six years on the City Fire Department, including a term as chief, and was born in Hillsboro Kansas where he trained before moving to Shafter.
Robt. B. McClain a long time Shafter farmer arrived at 18 months from Pomona where born. His family moved in 1917. He ran a large Wasco ranch growing potatoes and cotton and led the Shafter 20 30 club as its second president. He chaired the City Park Rest Room project and was an athlete at Shafter and Bakersfield high schools.
Frank Russell began a blacksmith and farm repair shop in Shafter in 1936, later expanding to a Pacific Avenue location and forming Russell Mfg. Co. He specializes in farm equipment, machine work, and trailer building. He served 10 years on the city fire department, including five as chief, and adapted a fire truck for local fires.
Nadine Conner, noted soprano, will perform at Wasco High School Auditorium on Sunday April 11 at 3 p.m., completing Wasco Community Concerts season. She canceled March 25 due to laryngitis after a large crowd gathered.
As part of School Week activities, Shafter High School will hold its annual Open House for parents and friends Friday evening from six to ten. The Visitor's Day was started two years ago to give the public a chance to visit the school and observe student work.
A comprehensive open house runs 6:00 to 8:45 with room by room demonstrations across departments. Art, shop, science, English, journalism, home economics, agriculture and music displays highlight class work and student projects. Refreshments follow the program and a guest-registration contest engages visitors.
Baron Hans de Meiss-Teuffen, famed explorer and banker, will headline the Shafter Town Hall Forum next Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Richland School Cafeteria. Admission is free and the public is invited. He will discuss The Cold War in the Middle East, following a noon talk to the Shafter Rotary Club on How I a Christian Would Solve the Palestine Problem.
Sheriff Johnny Loustalot addressed Shafter Kiwanis members on operating Kern County law enforcement across 10000 square miles. He noted jail costs at $1.06 per prisoner daily, detailed medical programs, and that 70 percent of arrests relate to alcohol issues while praising Alcoholics Anonymous.
