Best option when April 15 tax filing deadline looms
The California Society of Enrolled Agents urges filing for an automatic four month extension via IRS Form 4868 if unable to file by April 15. You do not need to pay tax due to get extension, but must estimate it. Late filing penalties can be heavy, while extension reduces penalties though interest may accrue.
