Local doctors and nurses volunteer to administer Salk vaccine as evening hours continue into next week with reduced charges of three dollars.

Richland Pool will reopen to the public on Sunday April 7 announced by Roy Farrell director of recreation. Hours during April and May are 2 to 5 pm Sundays and 4 to 5 pm weekdays with swimming lessons for students from kindergarten through eighth grade as part of the school PE program.

Peter Bender Dies Crushed Fixing Car in Shafter Driveway
Peter Bender 58 a Shafter rancher and retired businessman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car he was under crushed him to death. The physician said death was instant due to a crushing injury to neck and chest. He was repairing his own automobile at 471 Fabber Street in Shafter. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Monday at Ebenezer Reformed Church with Rev. Robert Stuebbe officiating. Burial will be in Shafter Cemetery. He was a WWI veteran and previously ran a farm equipment agency. Born May 1897 in Menno South Dakota, he settled in Bakersfield area in the late 1920s and moved to Shafter in 1931. Survivors include his widow.
