Residents and the Shafter Police Department secured a warrant to search 373 Mesa Verde on March 26 2003 uncovering Eduardo Acosta Ramirez Jr 29 asleep with three children present A military munition was found and the Kern County Bomb Squad removed it Monica Garza Ramirez 28 returned during the search and the children were released The scene yielded narcotics stolen vehicles and hundreds of electronic parts plus rifles pistols and tools tied to local thefts Officers believe the property was used as a chop shop and many items were identified as stolen The male suspect was jailed for multiple charges and the female for endangerment and receiving stolen property

Angela Wiedmann of Shafter rewarded as 2003 Young Person of the Year by the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. A Shafter High School senior with a 4.5 GPA, she plans pharmacy studies at the University of the Pacific. Captain Bell Uses Chain Saw to Destroy Confiscated Skateboards
Shafter police Captain Jeff Bell followed a court order to destroy skateboards confiscated after numerous citations. He said officers would warn youths that lawbreaking would lead to “chain sawing” consequences while downtown skateboarding remains prohibited. The destroyed boards will be buried at the county landfill as enforcement of new helmet laws for riders 16 and under begins.

A tour of the Shafter Police Department Evidence Room showcased a modern system with rolling storage bins boosting capacity by about 300 percent. Captain Jeff Bell led reconstruction and oversaw a new Surelock Evidence Tracking System that logs 2239 items 1000 people and 1000 files and can locate unclaimed wallets rings and other items.
