City council meets Friday at the city building for a light session with remonstrances on opening South Chestnut street and bids on Tipton street paving. Bids cover concrete curb gutter and concrete paving with two installment payments set for 1926 to align with tax collection.
William Toborg of North Elm street learned of his sister Mrs. Ernest Smock's death at her Indianapolis residence at 11 am today. She formerly lived here and had been away about 30 years. Surviving are her husband a daughter Anna Katherine a brother and a sister Mrs. Anna Becker of Atlanta Georgia. No funeral details are available.
J. E. Lee of Medora with sixteen years in theater plans a new picture house named The New Theater in Brownstown opening around Monday September 28. It will seat about 200 and operate Monday Wednesday and Friday nights at first, with more shows if patronage grows.
General Butler director of public safety said politicians spread reports the police would be demoralized by his plan to resign and return to the Marines when his term ends January 1. He claimed the public is being frightened to turn policemen away from their duties.
Due to the length of the Thief of Bagdad, two full shows cannot be given. Patrons are urged to take seats promptly at 7 o clock. Ice cream and home made cakes will be served along with soft drinks. The event runs Saturday afternoon and evening next to Gold Mine by Helping Hand class of St. Paul Sunday School.
Frank L. Schornick as Crothersville Bank receiver sues Frank B. Butler and other former officers in Bartholomew county circuit court seeking about 250 000 damages for alleged mismanagement connected to the bank failure. A related Jackson county suit by Butler and other directors against Schornick has spurred parallel actions. The trial is scheduled for November 30 before Judge J W Donaker.
Record: Federal Reserve data show 902 banks report savings totaling 7.903 billion on August 1, up by over 500 million since August 1924. July withdrawals blamed on vacation. 80 percent for travel. Americans remain world leaders in savings, per Reserve Board figures.
Jackson county offers one woman to attend the National Dairy Exposition October 10 to 17 in Indianapolis with expenses paid by the Farm Bureau. An auto caravan is planned with 50 cars and up to 250 people.
The annual election of officers for the year starting October 1 was held at the First Baptist church. Deacon, Deaconesses, Trustees, and church leaders were chosen for three, two, and one year terms with holdovers. The annual meeting to report last year’s work will be held September 30, and new officers assume duties October 1.

Two of five bandits from the Drake Hotel hold up face execution after a nine hour trial in Chicago. Frank B. Redkey, the cashier, was killed during the July 29 robbery in the Gold Coast. Holmes and Wilson alias Jack Wood are sentenced to death. Texas Court and Erik Nelson are dead, while William Mellenchuck escapes. The driver also reports a separate bidding session in Indianapolis for lubricants and fuels with winners to be announced later by the state highway commission.
In Peru Indiana on September 17 a young woman treated for bichloride of mercury poisoning was identified as Mildred Byington 23 from Marion Indiana. She said she followed Ralph Betzner of Bunker Hill from Toledo Ohio and swallowed the poison after he scorned her. Hospital staff said she likely will recover.
Dr. Gillespie relocates from the Progressive Music Store perch to a ground floor space two doors south of the Gold Mine. The move places the practice in a more accessible downtown location.
Three men were electrocuted and a fourth badly burned when a construction elevator wire touched a high tension street light wire near St. Thomas Catholic Church and school in Detroit. The accident occurred before noon as schoolchildren filled the streets. Police said the men were guiding the elevator’s guy wires used to hoist building materials.
Vandals damaged the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Fish weeks ago while the family was away. They cut up clothing and shoes and shook feathers from a feather bed. They mutilated $600 worth of U S treasury certificates which are said to be redeemable.
London reports Saklatvala, a British MP and Communist, refused entry to the United States after Washington revoked his passport for attending the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting. Critics urge Congress to curb state department power to bar foreign visitors deemed dangerous.
About 2,500 miners from seven Clinton area mines walked out after the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railway boosted monthly rates from 1.10 to 2.50. A public service commission hearing was requested, with officials including Tyler G. Lawton and H. H. Bravell present. The commission took the case under advisement.
Washington delegates join the state board of health meeting on the Washington water crisis as a motion to adjourn ends the session. Dr. W P King faces opposition from board members led by Dr T Victor Keene and Dr John A Turner while Mayor John McCarthy and local officials wait nearby.
Indianapolis report states J. Otto Lee secretary of the state printing board announced bids for state printing work for the next two years. Estimated cost about 500 000 dollars. Bids to be opened November 21 and awarded November 25. Purdue University printing not included with about 60 000 dollars.
International News Service reports Mayor John J. Hylan is definitively out of the mayoral race. His mentor John L. McCooey of Brooklyn says Hylan will not run on a third ticket and knows of no plans for such a bid. McCooey adds Hylan will abide by the primary result.
Mrs. B. K. Johnson 21 wife of the East Columbus Methodist Episcopal church pastor and Bartholemew county’s representative to the Indiana General Assembly was enrolled today in the Columbus High School junior class. She did not finish her high school course before marriage and said she is determined to complete it now.
