Inquest into a deadly crash linked to a Kelley’s Place auto spin found Charles Collins fatally injured. The father involved was fined for drunk driving as authorities reviewed the incident and determined manslaughter charges were not pursued.
Harry Simon waived arraignment in city court and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Charles Collins. He was bound over to the October term of circuit court with bond set at 3000. The actions followed his father’s $20 fine and costs on a charge of intoxication.
Harry Simon of North Vernon faces involuntary manslaughter charges after a Rockford ditch crash that killed Charles H. Collins, an employee at the state farm and colony at Butlerville. The inquest revealed the car belonged to Lee Wire and was used without consent. Andrew Simon pleaded guilty to intoxication and was fined. Funeral services for Collins are set for Sunday at Otter Creek church. Surviving relatives include his mother Mrs. William Collins and sister Mrs. Verna Watson, with five siblings in Jennings county.
Law enforcement in a two week speed control drive nets 21 arrests led by State Motor Policeman Lawrence Shields. Landis Cooper, son of a local garage man, faced a city court trial for speeding but the jury of twelve failed to reach a verdict after three ballots. The case will be retried in circuit court before Mayor C L Kessler, with Deputy Prosecuting Attorney S B Lowe and defense counsel Ed P Elsner.
A two year old girl survived a 20 foot fall after a kitten shielded her head and smiled at her parents. In Wabash Indiana a carpenter escaped with minor injuries after a fall was broken by the hips of a work horse hitched to a wagon.
Taxpayers in Seymour face about $3.13 per $100 assessed valuation for 1926, down five cents. Jackson township residents pay around $1.61, a 13 cent drop, as levies settle into city and county components with state and road bond costs.
In eight and a half months 2446 passenger and 166 truck licenses were issued to Seymour residents by Indiana. Brownstown logged 1230 passenger and 170 truck licenses as the fiscal year ends December 15, with overall county increases anticipated.
Mrs. Caroline Thias aged eighty died at 10 40 this morning at her sister’s home on McDonald street after a three month illness with complications. She was born October 13 1844 in Madison and lived here many years. Survived by five brothers and five sisters. Funeral at Pfaffenberger home 1 30 and Trinity Methodist church 3 with Rev. C J Moeller officiating. Burial Riverview cemetery.
Packing season slows start of term as six townships plan early openings while others push to September 21. Five townships Jackson Driftwood Washington Grassy Fork Carr kick off on Monday with Hamilton postponed a week. Brownstown Owen Salt Creek Vernon Redding Wershing Hamilton follow on September 21. Initial plan had been September 14.
International News Service reports strong pressure on President Coolidge to name Henry Lane Wilson of Indianapolis as ambassador to Japan. Pacific coast leaders insist the envoy be a western expert on Japanese affairs affecting the far west, giving Wilson a solid chance if his candidacy advances.
Albert McCammon living near the Marion church was arrested by Chief Misch and State officer Shields on charges of intoxication and liquor possession. He was found asleep in a wrecked automobile parked near the Jennings county line six miles southeast of the city. A five gallon jug of white mule liquor was found in the car. McCammon was taken to the city jail for a hearing in city court.
The Rev J D Martin pastor of the Presbyterian church will travel to Indianapolis next Wednesday for a one day session of the Indiana Synod. He says the aim is to plan a state wide cooperation of Presbyterian ministers to collect historical data and biographical sketches on Indiana Presbyterianism.
Indiana officials report the 1925 state fair ended with 202 680 paid attendees, below the 1924 total of 205 107 despite a colorful close. Weather hindered several days of the event, but crowds remained sizable in Indianapolis.

The second class of candidates in the Mooseheart Legion lodge membership drive received degree work Friday night at the lodge rooms. District organizers Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Sims of Columbus assisted. A social hour followed with refreshments. Officials said the open charter for the two new classes will be closed later this month.
Hiram Jones, a local druggist, was arrested by Sanitary Officer James Willey for breaking a scarlet fever quarantine placed over his home above his store on South Chestnut street. He pleaded guilty and paid a $10 fine plus costs, claiming the act was technical and that his family had observed the quarantine for 21 days.

Police scour the city for a burglar who entered Mr and Mrs J B Steffey home and beat them insensible with a hammer this morning. Mrs Steffey aged 19 suffered a fractured skull and is described as likely not to recover. Mr Steffey, 22, is in critical condition. The couple married a month ago.
Clarence Edmondson of North Pine Street was removed to Sebneck Memorial Hospital Friday afternoon and is reported in critical condition late this afternoon. Dr. J O Ritchie of Indianagan attends him. he is said to suffer a toxic grave. Edmondson serves as a route agent for the American Railway Express Company with local offices.
