The Meymour Lions Club committee leads a city wide clean up starting today through the week. Residents are urged to have rubbish ready by 7 AM for Wednesday collections in the northwest and northeast districts.
Residents must finish cleaning in time for collection. North of the Baltimore and Ohio line must have rubbish ready by 7 o clock Wednesday morning. South of the railroad area must have rubbish ready by 7 o'clock Thursday morning.
Arthur Lange of this city won the Indiana state district oratorical contest at Fort Wayne, earning a place in the national contest in Chicago. His speech titled We Must Go Forward reflected his Fort Wayne win, and he is a Shields High School graduate from Seymour. Albert Brethauer was elected Indiana district president with Walter Bengs and Miss Bertha Haynes also chosen as officers.
Two schools have new sound systems. Shields High School auditorium now has a public address system funded by the senior classes of 1932 and 1938 and tested ready for use. Riley School received a multiple speaker system financed by the Parent Teacher Association.
Miss Matilda Toborg nineteen died Saturday night at her Seymour home after a three month illness. Funeral services will be at 2 30 Tuesday at St Pauls Congregational Church with Rev J Willard Yoder officiating. Burial in Riverview Cemetery. She was born April 17 1914 in Seymour and lived here all her life. Survived by mother Henriette Toborg four brothers and three sisters all at home. Her father William Toborg died six years ago. She belonged to St and participated in school activities and girls athletics.
Mrs. Gertrude Steinwedel, Wa bash resident and former Miss Buecholtz, died Saturday afternoon in a Wabash hospital with her infant son. She was married to Oscar Steinwedel nine years ago in Wabash. Brothers John Steinwedel and Mrs. Karl Watson and sister Mrs. Clarence Alvey traveled from this city and Muncie for the services set in Wabash Tuesday.
Indiana's gross income tax study estimates residents pay roughly $3.75 annually each based on a $12 million yield spread across the state population. Clarence A. Jackson says the aim is a thin, even tax, noting some may fear broader taxation. Continued on page 2.
William C. Bunny Pearce, 48, longtime Jackson county resident, died at his Brownstown home after calling a doctor when he grew ill following a Seymour visit. A former professional baseball player and Reds manager, he owned a restaurant and ran a filling station. He belonged to the Elks Masons and Brownstown Lions. survived by three Indianapolis sisters. Funeral is at Wallace Brownstown with burial in Crown Hill Indianapolis.
Travis Trumbo secretary and treasurer of the Travis Carter Company died at his home on 622 North Park Street at 3 15 this afternoon after a period of illness his death came as a shock to the community.
A breach of the St Francis levee near Ber ties Ark sent muddy floodwater over 50 000 acres in northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri. Gaps up to 250 feet widened as Paragould levee breaches added to the damage and expectant flows threaten Greene Clay and Craighead counties and Dunklin County Missouri. Estimated area losses run into the millions from April May floods.
Josephine Baker 85, of Indianapolis and former Jennings County resident, died Sunday night after five days illness from double pneumonia. Survived by brothers Peter and Joseph Baker of Jennings County and George Baker of Seymour area along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services to be held at St. Anthony’s Church Indianapolis with burial at Four Corners after a 9 am service.
Brownstown authorities investigate theft of a large coupe owned by James Applewhite, parked in front of his residence after 10:30 Sunday night. The car, with radio, blanket, golf clubs and a pistol behind the seat, may have been coasted from its hillside parking spot.

Associated Press reports Carbon Mountain in Durango Colorado a pseudo volcano erupted with a loud blast and flames belching gas and smoke. A fissure 31 feet wide near the summit released gas and fire spread through the nearby forest as avalanches sent dirt and boulders into the valley.

Davis spoke at the Geneva disarmament conference to echo President Roosevelt's disarmament appeal as Paris supports four power cooperation for European pacification.
San Francisco May 22 1916 case notes a fresh account by John P Emerson former private detective who says Mooney and Billings were victims of a plot. Emerson claims two men abandoned a leaking bomb at Steuart and Market streets after discovering the device. He offers to testify at a second trial while Mooney questions the tale.

Jos eph W Harriman banker faces possible new bail rules after his self inflicted stab wound while recovering in a hospital. Bonding agents plan to arrest him on return to court and invalidate his 25000 dollar bail under a long standing rule that a bailed person remains a prisoner to their sureties. Harriman had delayed trial on alleged large scale bank falsification with government consent for a week.
Washington May 22 The House ways and means committee approved a program to raise income and gasoline taxes to fund a 3.3 billion public works employment bond issue. It would lift the income tax rate for low incomes and higher brackets, tax corporate dividends, and impose a gasoline levy. The plan totals about 221 million, while manufacturers' excise tax was rejected.
Reports from Peiping say Japanese cavalry moved within five miles of Tungehow, thirteen miles east of Peiping. Thirty American missionaries remained at their posts awaiting a peaceful turnover of the town today.
Seymour fire department responded to a light automobile fire at Broadway and Second streets Sunday night but found the blaze already extinguished. Owner's name was not learned.

Survived by wife Bess Deputy daughter Elizabeth Ann mother Mrs J D Curment sisters Mrs Melvin Wheeler and Mrs Blanche Houston. A note mentions France uses one tenth of registered commercial cars as buses.
