The total number of motor vehicles inspected by city, county and state law enforcement officers is rising steadily as the 1963 voluntary motor vehicle safety check program continues in Seymour and Jackson County.
Chief Freeman reports Seymour officers have checked 2 029 vehicles to date with 1 737 approved and 292 rejected. Over Tuesday to Wednesday this week 467 were checked, 146 approved and 29 9 rejected. Brownstown inspection saw 75 vehicles checked with five belt equipped. Brownstown set safety check May 22 6 to 8 p m. State police enforce a daily quota of 20 checks per trooper May 1 to June 15.
Seymour board of public works and safety took no major action on Ash Street improvements. A petition signed by 26 Ash Street property owners opposes a 20 foot street, arguing it is too costly. Public hearing on the proposed improvement is scheduled for May 22.
The Reynolds family of six lost their five room frame house and all belongings in a fire that neighbors spotted after 9 p m Wednesday. Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department reached Clearspring from Freetown too late to save the home believed about 20 years old. Cause undetermined but possibly faulty wiring started in a bedroom. The family's four children ranged from pre school to school age.
Ten men reported for pre induction examinations while four were inducted into military service this morning after reporting to Selective Service board No 34 Brownstown at 5 30 am. Inductees Arthur L Guthrie Roger D Baughman Charlie Jones and Charles Bottorff and examinees John P Monaghan Waldr on R Rust Wilbur G Smallwood Derald W Whipple Richard C Robbins Paul N Darlage James M Lawson David R Harmon Steven A Lopez and Willie J Taylor were to be shipped to Indianapolis for induction and examination. next Jackson County call is June 18.
Baccalaureate services for 215 members of the Class of 1963 at Seymour Senior High School will be held at 8 p m Sunday in the SSHS auditorium. Rev J Carleton Riddick of First Presbyterian Church will deliver the sermon Space Ships and Human Destiny.
Thompson appeared before Judge John M. Lewis in Jackson Circuit Court this morning on a concealed weapon charge. He initially pleaded not guilty but later changed to guilty in front of Justice of the Peace William Boley. The court found the guilty plea freely entered and held sentence under advisement pending a pre sentence report by County Probation Officer Robert L. Bennett. Thompson is held in custody until sentence is pronouncing.
M W Steinwedel of Sunset Parkway was elected vice president and EE Stan Shera of Westport became president at the Hoosier Hills Council Boy Scouts of America 34th annual meeting in Greensburg. The event drew about 100 Scouters from nine counties with a lengthy executive board slate and remarks by August Hook on scouting values and funding.
A "Little 100 Queen" contest will accompany Seymour's two day Little 100 races on May 24 and 25. Nine honor roll candidates from Seymour High School will be on the ballot with votes collected at the Seymour Paint and Wallpaper Co store. The winner receives a 25 dollar savings bond. two runners up get five dollar gift certificates, plus bouquets.
Cape Canaveral reports astronaut Gordon Cooper nearing completion of a 22 orbit Mercury mission. He logged his 19th earth orbit, prepared for a Pacific splashdown around 6:23 p.m. EST, with recovery ship Kearsarge in position. Cooper filmed horizon photography for MIT and communicated with Mercury Control as he conserved consumables.
Indiana officials schedule a 10 a.m. public hearing in the House chamber next Wednesday on the 2 percent sales tax, amid court actions over its constitutionality. State Revenue Commissioner James C. Courtney says collection could begin by July 1, with experts aiding setup at a cost of 22,500 dollars through the Public Administration Service.

Police investigated break ins at the Hi-Ho-Inn at 304 Mill Street and an attempted break in at George's of Seymour on Second Street and Broadway. Hi Ho Inn doors were kicked open and small cash amounts plus beer were missing. George's tire shop appeared to be entered but nothing was reported missing.
