By 1 p m about 27 percent of eligible voters had cast ballots in five precincts of the city primary. A total of 1 547 votes were recorded from 5 779 registered, with polls open 7 a m to 7 p m. Several mayoral candidates from both parties contested nominations along with council at large and city judge spots. Ideal weather aided turnout as 172 voted by absent ballot.
The Seymour Daily Tribune will tabulate city primary results as polls close at 7 p.m. Today readers may call or visit the Tribune office to view results on a large screen in the lobby. Noon voting surpassed May 1959 levels, with 54 registered voters in Seymour Redding precinct and partial tallies shown for precinct No. 1 Riley.
Wayne Pruitt, Jackson County supervisor for the Indiana state board of tax commissioners, led hearings Monday on 38 petitions seeking 1963 real estate assessment reductions totaling 31753. Thirty two owners appeared, and Pruitt will forward recommendations to the state board. one Brownstown Township case was opened at the request of the township trustee and county assessor.
Seymour board of public works and safety will continue hearings on preliminary street improvement resolutions at 10 a m May 22 with final action postponed to 7 30 p m that day. Public notice lists West Eighth Street North Park Street South Broadway Brown Street and Ash Street projects for public deliberation and potential cost justification.
The 36th annual Honor Day at Seymour High School will start at 10 a.m. Thursday in the school auditorium. Principal Joseph M. Cull announced the program featuring pledge led by Barbara Demske, singing by The Star Spangled Banner directed by Earl Prout with David Kasting on organ. Academic, activity, and special awards will be presented by faculty and local organizations, including Girls' State and Boys' State honors. Parents and friends are expected to attend.
Shields Junior High School runs orientation sessions this week for sixth graders from Seymour Community Schools and eighth graders from St. John's Lutheran School at Sayers. Principal Englehardt directs the program with morning sessions from 9 to 11. Guides assist groups from each sending school, and eye exams are offered by nurse Miss Willma Rose Smith.
Crothersville will install a new lighting system at its ball park after a town board approval. John W. Lewis announced the go ahead at Monday’s meeting, with Gerald Garriott to oversee installation to support summer recreation. The board also reviewed water lines, a proposed sewage plant roadway, a 50 50 water line extension for Kelso Briner and Donald Donahue subdivision plans, and awarded Sinclair Refining Company of Seymour a gasoline contract for town vehicles.
Seymour police investigated a Monday night dog bite on the sidewalk near 205 Kessler Boulevard. Elsie Hancock suffered a deep calf wound, received first aid, and was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital. The dog, owned by David Fine of 205 Emerson Drive, will be kept under surveillance for about two weeks.
Jackson County commissioners opened and read bids for the coming season and awarded the contract to L. P. Cavett Company of Lockland Ohio on its low bid about one and three four cents below last year. They also approved road and subdivision actions and invited bids for materials while planning a special meeting for additional appropriations.
The Brownstown town board accepted Ralph Rochner’s resignation from the park board at its monthly meeting and will appoint a successor later. Ralph Mitchell was appointed to the library board to fill the vacancy from Mrs Mayme Vermilya’s recent death.
Police report hundreds of demonstrators including Dick Gregory arrested in Birmingham as part of a large desegregation drive. King pledged more protests amid crowded jails with thousands detained since Thursday.
Two separate accidents in Seymour on Monday afternoon caused about 445 in damage. Elizabeth Chaille 42 was cited for failure to yield after her 1955 coach hit Mary Casey 36's 1960 coach at North Walnut and West Third streets. A hit and run damaged Lawrence Hillebrand 1960 station wagon on West Fifth Street.
Gov. Matthew E. Welsh will hold a news conference at 9 a.m. Wednesday. No subject was announced. Press secretary Richard H. Martin said the governor hopes to take a brief vacation trip later this week.
In Groton Connecticut three men died and two were injured one critically in a flash fire in the aft trim tank of the submarine Flasher under construction at Electric Boat. The fire’s cause was not determined and names were withheld pending next of kin notification. The nuclear plant was not involved. Workers cut a hole in the trim tank to reach victims due to confined space.
A skunk one cat and 281 dogs were inoculated at Shields Park and Gaiser Park Monday night as the 1963 county wide rabies clinic opened in Jackson township. Veterinarians will finish two more clinics in Seymour with a wrap up at Kriete's Corner Wednesday night.
Telstar 2 launched aboard a Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral at 6 38 a m and reached orbit as NASA reported a 175 pound satellite in space with good radio signals. The transfer test aims to gauge the new craft against Telstar 1 as a transatlantic television relay between the United States and Europe with initial orbital estimates between 575 and 6559 miles above Earth.
Washington reports a stalemate as Haiti waits for U N Security Council action on Dominican threats. The State Department orders dependents of U S staff to depart Haiti while OAS and regional talks spar over next steps.
