Jackson county officials report a surge in absent voter's ballots for Tuesdays primary. Joe W. Goss notes 68 requests with 43 returned, exceeding typical 40 percent return. Supplies for 40 precincts are distributed as inspectors prepare to cast ballots by 6 PM Tuesday.
William Bowie of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company will present In Our Old Kit Bag at the Seymour Rotary Club weekly dinner meeting at 6 15 Monday night at the Elks Club. The event is Past Presidents Night with all former presidents honored. E G Harlow chairs the program.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Stevens and their daughter Joyce seek someone who can read Finnish to decipher a Finland bound letter and photo received from a box of clothing the Stevens family donated last fall to a local First Baptist Church drive for European needy. The letter may be a thank you note but its contents remain unreadable.
Seymour police and state police investigated a Friday night break-in at the Jackson County Motors garage at Second and Ewing streets. A dual control coach used by Shields High School driver-training classes was stolen and later found abandoned on a county road near Austin, out of gas.
The Millport bridge on State Road 135 over the Muscatatuck River at the Jackson-Washington county line south of Wallonia is being repaired by Seymour sub district maintenance men of the Indiana state highway commission. New mall sills are being placed and other improvements are made while traffic continues to use the highway. The project is led by Co. E. Bruce of the city, sub district maintenance superintendent.
May Day is lightly observed nationwide with colleges celebrating May Queens and May poles while Seymour recalls a past city-wide observance of garlands, flowers, and music. Heavy Derby weekend traffic will bypass detour on U S 31 between Seymour and Columbus with passenger cars allowed to use the road until Monday morning. Truck traffic remains restricted to Alternate 31 from the Seymour junction to the Columbus junction while patching on Road 31 nears completion.
The Housing Expediter announced a grace period for landlords to file reports on leases increasing rents up to 15 percent that ended on or before April 1 1948. Reports must be filed within 15 days after termination or by April 16 1948 for expirations on or before April 1. Form D 96 is available at local rent offices.
Bids for painting a White River bridge on U. S. Route 50 west of Brownstown are due Thursday May 6 at the state house annex in Indianapolis. John H. Lauer, chairman of the state highway commission, will receive bids and read seventeen maintenance contracts along with nine road resurfacing and eight bridge repair projects.
The Jackson county treasurer's office in Brownstown saw a surge of property owners paying the spring tax installment before the Monday May 3 deadline to avoid delinquencies. Many paid by mail while notaries processed mortgage exemptions for properties with mortgages of $1,000 or more and veterans exemptions.
Judge Chester A. Davis of Lawrence Circuit Court was named grand chancellor of the Indiana district Knights of Pythias at the two day state convention. Davis is a Scottish Rite Mason and member of the Elks Moose and Eagles Lodges. Chauncey Goodwin attended as local lodge delegate.
President Truman will address about 800 delegates of the National Health Assembly tonight in Washington D C. The meeting aims to draft a ten year health program for the nation with plans outlined for health policy and national wellness initiatives.

Ruby Callahan earned a state scholarship to Purdue University. Graduation events run Sunday and Monday, with school ending next Wednesday May 5.
U S Senator William E Jenner launched his bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Indiana with a Friday night speech amid attacks from rival candidates. He denounced the statehouse machine and defended his candidacy against criticism tied to Senate endorsements and party infighting.

Parrot of Louisville was fined $1 plus costs totaling $11. Charles Russell of Seymour pleaded not guilty and his trial is set for 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. All were arrested early today by city police.
