Jackson county's 1940 wheat allotment is 22 240 acres, 2001 more than 1939's 20 239. The national 1940 allotment totals 62 million acres, up 7 million, based on seeded wheat 1929 38 and past programs. Farmers will receive individual allotments by mail soon to aid winter wheat planning.
The Daily Tribune announces Certified Dollar Days starting Thursday and running through Saturday. Four judges Mrs. Charles Rust Mrs. Charles Ramph Mrs. F E W Sargeant and Miss Harriett Roeger inspected participating stores Tuesday and certified many items as real bargains.
Tony Galento stepped onto the scale at 233 pounds while Joe Louis weighed 200% pounds in advance of their Yankee Stadium heavyweight title bout tonight. The Associated Press report notes a 33 pound edge for Galento as the ring odds settle for the fight.
Jackson county residents receive guidance from county agent W P Stall on bacterial wilt afflicting cantaloupes and related gourds. Beetle control via spraying or dusting is key, using a calcium arsenate and copper compound mix plus talc. Early-season applications prove most effective. later efforts are less so, with copper helping fungal issues as well.
The Young Democratic Club of Jackson County will meet at 7 30 o clock Thursday night at the Seymour license bureau branch in the Wehstage building. Allen H Nierman of Browns town, club president, called the meeting to discuss the national convention in Pittsburgh next month and a trip to Indianapolis Friday to greet Paul V McNutt former governor on his return from the Philippines where he has served as high commissioner.
The Jackson County Amateur Contest of the Farm Bureau will be held at Brownstown High School Friday night June 30 at 8 o'clock. Winners from township Farm Bureau meetings compete in a county contest with junior and adult divisions for vocal, instrumental, dance, reading and similar acts. Miss Opal Easting, county social and educational chairman, will preside.
The third act of the historical pageant The Church in Its Third Building was staged at the Baptist gymnasium. It covers 1887 to 1909 the construction and dedication of the current church building. Scenes include a Ladies Sewing Society plan for frescoing funds and a 1897 Bible school session led by Mrs Lucy Gardiner and Mrs M C Carpenter.
Harris Lucas, eleven, of Seymour, Indiana, rides his blue and white “Lucky Star” derby car in the sixth annual All American Soap Box Derby near Indianapolis. The entry, built with his father’s help, will be inspected for rules compliance before the race down Williams Creek Hill, with winners advancing to Akron nationals.

Elizabeth Himler aged 79 lifelong city resident died at 3 35 p m Tuesday after a three day illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 30 p m from First Methodist Church with Rev Albert Schmitt in charge. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. She was born in Crothersville on August 19, 1859. Friends may call after 7 p m tonight at the family home.
The American Association of State Highway Officials voted to table indefinitely the plan to relocate U S 31 to bypass Seymour. W C Markham said the move depends on future construction not yet definite, seen as a setback for relocation supporters in Seymour while Indiana’s highway commission had urged the change.
Indianapolis June 27 AP Strategists for the McNutt for President campaign deploy a large mail campaign, mailing about 2 500 letters daily to Democratic precinct committeemen delegates and party leaders as McNutt plans a trip from San Francisco to the east. The operation employs 45 to 50 volunteers in a modern headquarters and aims to show broad support while building a nationwide mailing list believed to exceed 100 000 organizational workers.
Indiana moves to designate through or preferential routes under the new traffic code effective July 1. The state highway commission will place stop signs at entrances to preferential routes and local authorities may designate such streets elsewhere. About twenty percent of state highway crashes occur at intersections. obedience to signs aims to reduce them.
Mrs. Sarah A. Smith age seventy nine died at the home of her son Ward Smith in Vincennes after years of ill health. She is survived by her sons Lee Smith of Chicago and another son at Vincennes, a daughter Mrs. Elsie Meyers of Vincennes, another daughter in Vincennes, and two granddaughters Mrs. Harvey Norris and Miss Audrey June Smith of Chicago. Funeral services were held in Vincennes.
Washington June 28 caustic exchanges between President Roosevelt and senatorial foes heightened tensions on Capitol Hill. House leaders moved to block a Republican bid to delay action on the administration's monetary legislation. The rules committee authorized parliamentary means to send the bill to a Senate House committee for possible compromise, aiming to settle the central issue of extending the president's devaluation powers before Friday's deadline.
