A North Vernon truck driver, Douglas Porter, about 23, in critical condition at Schneck Memorial Hospital after his loaded dump truck skidded on Sixth Street at Elm, hit two utility poles, and overturned. Police noted Porter had World War II service. another driver, Chester Shipley, described Porter’s vehicle as speeding and veering to avoid a coal truck.

John Gilbert Sutton a motor machinist's mate first class in the U S Navy was killed in action in the Pacific. Burial services for Sutton age twenty seven were held in an Allied cemetery on a Pacific island per official word to his wife Florence Stahl Sutton of 522 West Jackson Street. He served over two years in the Navy and spent fifteen months overseas, son of Mrs Mazie Sutton of Seymour Indiana.

C G Steinwedel urged Jackson County residents to buy as many Seventh War Loan bonds as possible to meet individual quotas. Through June 23, Jackson County lent $1 008 170.71 of a $1 058 500 target, with Series E and other bonds contributing $260 570.31 to individuals and $405 263.15 to corporations.
