A heat peak of 98 degrees gave way to thunder showers bringing hail and winds across Jackson County. Rain and hail damaged crops near Seymour and Dudleytown, with REMC power outages from Dudleytown substation. No major damage reported overall.
Seymour resident Walter Carl Cooper 35 escaped injury when his 1947 station wagon stalled at the B and O crossing on Broadway and was struck by a freight train traveling east at about 23 miles per hour. Alfred Lucas flagging at the crossing and train crew from Seymour reported the incident. Damages were minor and no citations issued.
Robert William Howell, 29, Mitchell, pleaded guilty to public intoxication in city court before Mayor Donald L Heiwig after his arrest by city police in the 600 block of East Tipton street at 7 15 Tuesday night. The mayor imposed a 20 dollar fine plus 13 dollars costs, with Howell to be turned over to Sheriff George W Abel today to serve 33 days at the state penal farm Putnamville in lieu of payment.
Wheat harvest in Jackson County progresses a week ahead with high quality yields. Arthur Bishop of Dudley area reports 38.51 bushels per acre from 14 acres at Crothersville elevator, grain testing 62 with 11.70 moisture and No 1 quality, with premium. Purdue predicts statewide gains despite minor army worm and mildew damage.
Seymour chamber officials join Southern Indiana Inc. in New Albany for a forestry discussion led by Philip Willkie president of the Indiana State Forestry Association. About 100 attendees from 30 southern Indiana counties expected to attend. Proposals include opposing abolition of national forests supporting land acquisition for forests and resisting federal control of state forests while urging Congress to recognize state needs.
A Texas clipping recalls a 179 degree sun exposure in McGregor near Seymour. Shade reached 117 degrees as the hour and a half blaze produced a brassy haze, causing prostrations and loss of livestock. The piece notes a narrow, two mile wide heat band and widespread suffering. Page 8.
About 500 Master Masons and wives are expected at Seymour for Jackson Lodge No. 146 centennial celebration. The event marks the lodge charter in 1853 with ceremonial dedications at West Second street and banquets at Trinity Methodist and Central Christian churches attended by Indiana Masons including Newell A. Lamb and Steven L. Miller.

Two Seymour men near the end of a 16 week session at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri with the 6th Armored Division. Pvt Billy R Ault and Pvt Glen D Shade earned eight weeks basic training followed by eight weeks engineer training learning pioneer tools bridge construction and combat skills. After completion they will be assigned to specialist schools or act as replacements.
Salem resident Benjamin F. Wade, 66, was killed Tuesday when a truck driven by Chester L. Hainey, 19, collided with Wade’s car on State Road 56 five miles west of Salem. Wade’s vehicle rolled down an embankment after the impact.
President Eisenhower urges congressional backing for a foreign aid program at the upcoming Big Three meeting. The House sets a 4.998 billion dollar ceiling for the year starting July 1, while the Senate panel approves 5.318 billion. Chairman Wiley backs limited transfer authority and Taft hints at withholding European aid until defense treaties are ratified.
The Rev. Wilbur N. Teasley and the Rev. C. W. Taylor, pastors from Trinity and Brownstown Methodist churches, depart for Philadelphia to attend the World Methodist Convocation. Roger Smallwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smallwood, will also attend as a youth representative, leading 2,200 Methodist youth from the Columbus district.
Medora town board invites sealed bids for blacktopping three tenths of a mile of street. Clerk-treasurer Clifford Lockman says bids will be received by the board of trustees at the town hall until Tuesday night July 7 at 8 o'clock DST.
The office will be closed from June 21 through July 5. Dr. C. E. Gillespie is the supervising physician during this period.
Berlin reports Prime Minister Otto Grotewohl announced releases for many East Germans jailed for joining uprisings against Red rule while warning that the genuinely guilty face severe punishment. He spoke to Socialist Unity workers as martial law continued eight days after the June 17 riots. About 16 000 jailed workers in the Soviet zone and 4 000 in East Berlin prisons were cited.
Jackson county commissioners will receive sealed bids for a half ton pickup for the highway department and supplies for the county home for the quarter ending September 30 1953 at their regular July 6 meeting. The truck must be green with yellow department lettering and include a heater defroster oil filter electric wipers spare tire and be a 1937 Chevrolet trade in the old pickup. Inspect the trade in at the county highway garage in Browns town weekdays 7 am to 3 pm.
Nineteen Jackson County American Red Cross volunteers staffed a bloodmobile at Camp Atterbury on Tuesday to collect life saving pints. Names of helpers include Mrs. E. F. Scherer Mrs. Robert Birge Mrs. Robert L. Peden Mrs. Carl Pollett Mrs. Chris Ahlbrand and others.
U S and South Korean infantry repelled a division scale Chinese assault in Central Korea near Iron Triangle. NBC jets claimed six Red MIGs downed as Boomerang Ridge and Sniper Ridge saw heavy fighting and retreats by afternoon. Casualties were reported on Boomerang Ridge with remaining contact fading by mid day.
President Syngman Rhee signaled openness to a Washington emissary and potential armistice talks while threatening to resist a rejected truce. Seoul forms a cabinet committee to defend the country in case of cease fire, as Robertson carries a secret Dulles note toward Seoul.
Robert Boswell seven years old, son of Mr and Mrs Lionel Boswell of Nebraska Ind, was dragged head down by a frightened pony for about a quarter mile on a gravel road. He suffered deep lacerations and facial bruises, no skull fracture found on X ray, kept for observation at Schneck Memorial Hospital.
