Representatives from all county community organizations and public offices will host a series of meetings this week and next to form voluntary neighborhood leadership groups. Each group will include eight to twelve rural families with one man and one woman as leaders to support the Victory program and community services. First meeting at the courthouse tonight with county committee. other sessions set for Seymour, Crothersville, Freetown, Clearspring, Cortland, Dudleytown, and more.

Contracts to be Let for Twin Engine School Base Work
Contracts for clearing, grabbing and grading the main base field of the Advanced Twin Engine School southwest of the city are to be let on June 29. Water supply tests show underground water adequate for the center, with permanent wells to be drilled soon. A contract for seven warehouses at the center was recently awarded to Shelby Construction Company with work to begin shortly.

Land Steel sets 3515 net tons steel plate record
A. P. Miller of the Indiana Harbor plant announced Chicago yesterday that Land Steel produced 3,515 net tons of steel plate in a 24 hour run. The figure equals seven tenths of the plate required to build a Liberty ship of 10,000 tons capacity.

One of Southern Indiana's largest supermarkets will open Thursday at Third and Chestnut streets opposite the post office. Jackson County commissioners will meet Friday July 24 at 10am in the courthouse to receive sealed bids for labor and materials for the Schneck Memorial Hospital addition. Bids cover gauging plaster asphalt tile floors linoleum paint ceramic tile and base and passenger elevator with plans by McGuire Shook and Beington Williams on file at the county auditor's office. Each bid must include bidder's bond or certified check and delivery of materials per specifications.

Navy reports heavy losses as submarines sink thirteen ships
The Associated Press reports a twelve day period during which enemy submarines sank thirteen United Nations merchantmen in the Caribbean. Casualties totaled forty eight dead and eighty seven missing, with six hundred thirty five survivors. The June 15 losses near New England included Americans and sailors among the dead and missing.

Defense Firemen To Be Honored At Seymour Arm Band Presentation
Official presentation of arm bands to Seymour Auxiliary Firemen will occur Thursday night at Gaiser Park after a band concert. The 33 volunteers, Jackson County’s first trained and state certified defense unit, completed 70 hours of fire fighting and first aid training. Richard S. Robertson, Brownstown civilian defense director, will present the bands to the firefighters. A large crowd is expected at the park.

Burglary Reported at Boas Station on Second and Broadway
Police continue investigations into a burglary at George's Good Gulf Service filling station at Second Street and Broadway. Stolen items include John Tipton Shields' automobile and several new tires. The abandoned car was found Monday noon on a county road near Walnut Street.
