Brownstown owner William Cockerham says he will not operate the town dump any longer. He warns residents to stop using the site or face prosecution and offers to fence the area if the town provides and operates a municipally owned truck for disposal. He notes countywide dumping and insufficient funding.
The Seymour weather notes compare downtown noon unofficial data with official readings from Ruth Everhart in Rockford. It lists Sunday maximum and minimum, river height at 7 am of 3.4 feet, and precipitation at 0.71 inch, with today sunset at 9 22 and sunrise Tuesday at 6 16 EDT.
Earl Warren retires after 16 years as chief justice and 52 years in public service as Warren is replaced by Warren Burger. President Nixon presides in a restrained ceremony citing fairness integrity and dignity as the new chief justice pledges to defend the Constitution and administer justice impartially.
London AP reporting that singer Judy Garland was found dead in her London home by her fifth husband Mickey Deans. Scotland Yard found no foul play while an autopsy was scheduled. surgeon Dr. Phillip Lebon cited cirrhosis of the liver and said death could have come any time.
Police investigated four weekend traffic incidents. Ramona Jolly and Frieda Jolly involved in a two car crash at Bruce and Carter, damages about 950 dollars. Charles McCarty backed into Timothy Scott at Walnut and Sixth, damage undetermined. Hilda Osterman reported damage to a parked car on Seventh Street. Larry Yazell collided with Patricia Stout on East Fourth and Vine, damages 200 and 150 dollars.
High winds fueled a fast moving thunderstorm that toppled two PSI poles between Ind 135 and Medora, cutting power to Brownstown Medora and areas west to Bedford for about 90 minutes. A 69 000 volt line fault knocked out a Pumpkin Center breaker. Restoration followed as lines were sectionalized.
Two of 12 Purdue University students in an Indiana agricultural internship join Jackson County assignments. Allen King and Neal McDonald will mentor with local teachers Robert Myers and Nelson Lewis while gaining experience in FFA activities and agricultural education programs. King farms 642 acres and is a Milroy High School graduate. McDonald is a Columbus High School graduate and Purdue member of Ceres.
