Noblitt-Pruitt Subdivision Annexed Despite Council Split

The Seymour city council completed annexation of the Noblitt-Pruitt subdivision despite a councilman’s bid to stall. Ordinance 1292 passed on final reading with six yes votes. Athol P. Woolls opposed citing water and fire protection failures. The Water Company survey projected $190 deposits per of 42 subscribers, with $133.20 refundable and $56.80 a loss, plus tap-in and connection fees. Hydrant costs and potential double charges for partial uptake were discussed. hydrants would be installed only if subdivision residents accept city water.

Farmer Survives Lightning Bolt and Walks from Hospital

Cortland man O. M. Kelsay, 40, was struck by lightning on his farm and dragged from a tractor. He survived with burns and leg abrasions and walked out of Schneck Memorial Hospital about 18 hours later saying he would not risk a tractor in bad weather. Doctors called his survival a miracle.

Council Approves Off-Street Parking Plan in Seymour

Seymour council approves a two acre off street parking site between the B&O tracks and Tipton street for 50 dollars monthly with a five year lease option. The plan includes razing the old freight building and using salvaged materials for a future city garage.

Two Slightly Injured During Rains Monday Night In Area

In Seymour and surrounding areas a light to moderate rain fell Monday night with 0.80 inch. two people were slightly injured in an automobile crash west of Seymour during the storm. Brownstown and Wallonia reported little to no rain.

Seymour City Bans Slot and Pinball Machines

Police chief Charles Koerner ordered all taverns and clubs to remove slot and pinball machines after a state warning. Operators face arrest and license loss. confiscated devices will be destroyed. Most illegal machines were lever-operated in-line types paying off in free games convertible to cash.

Heat Draws Crowds to Starve Hollow Lake

Temperatures near 90 degrees draw a large crowd to Starve Hollow Lake on Sunday. About 2,625 people passed through the gate with 607 cars admitted. Lifesaving classes start Friday under William Brinkman and Noble Wright, with junior and senior tracks for different ages and hours at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Lifeguards oversee swimming from 10 a.m. to dark all week, and no swimming without a guard. The park plans more playground equipment and furnishings as completion continues.

Soil Supervisors Enter Pacts For Work Set Agenda

Jackson County soil conservation district supervisors completed plans for the new soil service program and signed memoranda with the US Department of Agriculture the Indiana State Soil Conservation Service and Purdue Extension. A full time soil technician is to be assigned, likely mid July. Everette Otte chaired the meeting at the county extension office with Roy E. Beck noting the timing and scope.

Drive For Membership Planned By DAY Group

New and renewal memberships were signed at the Monday meeting of Chapter No 173 Disabled American Veterans in the VFW Hall. Francis Elsner presided as temporary commander and announced a large upcoming membership drive once an up to date list is ready. Refreshments were served after the meeting.

Rioting psychiatric patients at the U S Medical Center in Springfield Missouri held five guards during a takeover of the 10 North wing. Guards formed three rings around the prison ward as inmates demanded food and coffee and threatened violence if challenged.
