Nazi forces are believed to be preparing to employ parachute troops as Britain reinforces its desert armies. Soviet dispatches claim Nazi losses near ten million in a year of war, with German casualties exceeding three and a half million killed, wounded, or missing.
Preliminary work for seven warehouses on the base field of the Advanced Twin Engine School southwest of here will begin Wednesday. Clyde R. Yater of Shelby Construction Company heads preparations. a Louisville contract award followed. Excavation for foundations may start soon, with completion expected in sixty days. Landowners are signing options as negotiations continue. The site includes a small burial lot with seven graves last used in 1866.
Indiana University continues its war term with thirty Jackson county students enrolled in the third semester. The term, split into two parts, runs through June with a June 27 end date for the first half and a June 29 start for the second. Attendance features a higher male representation and includes students from every county in the state plus thirty five other states and ten foreign countries.
The army supply bill, the largest in history, would finance a 4,500,000-strong force by July 1, 1943 and extend lend lease to United Nations. It totals defense outlays at over 205 billion dollars in three years, with 12.7 billion for war material and 23 550 planes.
William Krumme, a German native born in 1845, marked his 97th birthday Sunday in Seymour. He arrived in the United States as a Civil War era stowaway at age 21 and lived on a farm west of Seymour before retiring. He is a Lutheran church member and is survived by son Henry H. Krumme, daughter Anna Krumme of 828 South Poplar, and grandchildren Ora and Pauline Krumme.
Seymour fire department dealt with two small incidents. At 5:25 Monday, a lace curtain at Earl Parker’s 717 Centennial street home caught fire but was extinguished before firefighters arrived. At 11:10 Tuesday morning, Noble James’s 319 East Tipton street residence reported a boiled over potato stove that flared briefly, causing no damage.
The navy announced that two torpedoes sank a medium freighter off the coast on June 15 in three minutes. About eighty eight lives were lost, the heaviest American coastal toll since the war began. Eighty one people were rescued including twenty three soldiers and crew members.
Jackson county prepares for another draft registration on June 30. Men born from January 1, 1922 to June 30, 1924 must register at five centers including Seymour Wehstage Building Brownstown courthouse Crothersville Medora and Freetown. Centers open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time.
Six divorce filings appear in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown. Robert Glenn Rose seeks a divorce from Harriett Ethie Rose with custody of a minor child, represented by Edward S. Lustig. Inez Harrington seeks a divorce from George William Harrington with restoration of her maiden name Inez Mitchell, represented by Lustig. Mary Doty seeks a divorce from Lebert Doty with $150 alimony, represented by John M. Lewis. Daisy M Lanier seeks a divorce.
Congressman Earl Wilson toured Camp Atterbury with Mayor Fred C. Owens and local officials. He praised the camp’s work despite bad weather and material shortages, warned Americans to expect battlefield losses, and noted his Indiana trip ties to the state Republican convention with a Lawrenceburg speech planned.
Several Jackson county women joined a Columbus Red Cross Home Nursing conference at the Presbyterian Church hosted by the Columbus Chapter. The event ran 9:30 registration to 3:30 sessions with a noon luncheon at the Columbus Hotel led by Mrs. Cisella Brady and featured attendees including Mrs. E. J. Banta and Mrs. H. H. Carter among others.
Rubber collection drives surge in Jackson County with air raid wardens canvassing neighborhoods. Trucks will pick up old rubber from homes Friday and downtown businesses, as piles rise at filling stations and bulk plants.
A campaign collects old rubber starting Friday at 8:30 in the morning. A rubber matinee at the Majestic Theater is set for Wednesday at 10 o'clock sponsored by the Majestic and Phillips Petroleum Company. Ten pounds of old rubber serves as admission.
Institutional and industrial sugar consumers may apply at the county rationing board office at Brownstown for their July August quota authorizations. Applications may be made any time before July 1, but early filing avoids a last minute rush and potential delays in processing.
Edward T. Noblitt sixty one of Indianapolis a Jonesville native and former Pennsylvania Railroad passenger conductor died early Monday at St Vincent's Hospital Indianapolis after nine weeks of cancer. He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs James Noblitt, lived in Jonesville and Columbus before moving to Indianapolis about thirty years ago. He is survived by his widow formerly Miss Ethel Shank and three brothers Benjamin Noblitt Columbus John Noblitt Columbus Ohio and Joel Noblitt Oakland California.
Will H Smith, Collector of Internal Revenue for Indiana district, urges auto users to buy the $5 auto tax stamp now on sale in post offices and IRS offices. The law makes using a vehicle before paying the tax a misdemeanor with fines up to $25 or up to 30 days imprisonment.
Aboard 83 foot submarine chasers the life is brutal and cramped. The crew of about 18 sleeps in relays, speed tops 20 knots, and many cruises keep men at sea longer than planned. The galley is tiny and electric, making baking and liquid foods impractical during heavy rolling. Food quality depends on duty length, with shortages common on longer stays at sea.
In Washington both leaders, flanked by experts, met to devise the offensive strategy of the war. A secrecy shield surrounds timing and location for operation as mounting Allied power is mobilized. Senator George D Ga' proposed cheap insurance for up to ten million civilians who may work in home defense as an alternative to cash benefits for enemy action victims. The Senate finance committee considered Senator Pepper's plan to pay 10 to 85 dollars monthly to attack or accident victims, while Pepper pledged to continue the push.
