1950 census figures show Jackson County at 28 246 residents, up from 26 612 in 1940. Seymour city adds 1 102 to reach 9 632. Brownstown township grows to 8 631 from 8 463. Page 5 continues with county and district totals.
State police investigate a Wednesday night burglary at Barbecue Haven on U S Road 31 north of the U S Road 50 junction east of Seymour. The thieves smashed a rear door pane, stole an automatic music machine worth 20 to 30 dollars, and failed to access a cigarette machine. A separate break in at Spaugh's grocery on Reddington saw a window broken but no entry gained. Detective Sgt. Robert L. Bennett leads the Barbecue Haven case with Officer Lawrence Conway assisting.
Mrs. Alice Taskey 76 longtime Jackson County resident died at her daughter’s home after a two year illness. She leaves 11 surviving children, 39 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and several siblings. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Tower and Burkholder Funeral Home, Rev. George L. Florence officiating. Burial Riverview Cemetery.
Hamilton township trustees plan a July 10 meeting to consider additional appropriations totaling 2000 dollars for furniture equipment supplies lighting and fuel. Officials cite an emergency due to changes in the old building and heating system. Taxpayers may attend and be heard.
Four persons, three of them fined $100 plus costs and given six month sentences, faced public intoxication charges linked to the drowning death of Ella Mitchell, 43, of Seymour in White River at Columbus. Coroner Dudding planned to finish his inquiry, with Prosecutor Lienberger saying no grand jury is planned due to lack of foul play evidence. Ernest Bennett was found guilty of public intoxication in Columbus City Court after pleading not guilty.
Funeral services for Benjamin Franklin George 74 retired merchant were held at Maumee Baptist Church with Rev. W C Chaffin. Burial was in Robertson cemetery. He died after two years of illness, heart trouble. Born April 6 1876 in Owensburg he was survived by seven sons four daughters a sister five half brothers and one half sister along with 32 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Wilson College honors Miss Mary Lou Schneck of Seymour for academic achievement in the second semester ending June 12. Dean Margaret C. Disert announced the honor list. Schneck is a freshman and daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles W Schneck.
Mr and Mrs Loren Brewer plan to participate in the 27th annual Indiana Moose Association convention at Hotel Lincoln Indianapolis with over 1000 delegates expected. The Brewers hold lodge and auxiliary posts while Glenn Williams also attends. events include receptions, a Moose night baseball game, a Saturday parade, and Sunday elections and city selection for 1951.
Dora Ridlen 82 a Jackson County resident died at 412 Indianapolis Avenue after a two year illness. Born February 8 1868 in Washington County she married James Johnson in 1885 and Theodore B Ridlen in 1899. Surviving are three children four grandchildren eight great grandchildren with services set for 2 pm Saturday at Voss Mortuary followed by burial in Riverview Cemetery.

The Indiana Conference of Methodist churches met in Bloomington with about 800 delegates. Revenue for the year reached 3.83 million dollars, church membership rose to 139,662 across 589 churches, and school enrollment totaled 96,451. Southern churches added 1.58 million in property value, with 463 Woman's Societies noted.
Lt (jg) Thomas D. Hall USNR Seymour R2 undergoes a two week reserve training cruise aboard the submarine Burrfish operating from Norfolk Virginia. The program supplements Organized Submarine Units training with practical submarine operations experience. Hall of Submarine Division 940 Indianapolis is employed by Jackson Engineering Co Indianapolis.
The bill extending federal rent controls to December 31 cleared Congress with a 176 to 145 House vote and a 40 to 24 Senate tally. President Truman was expected to sign promptly, though the measure falls short of his one year extension goal. The bill offers six more months of controls with possible renewal, and allows municipalities and counties to decontrol certain areas.
Three men were wounded by gunfire at the American Enka rayon plant in Morristown, Tennessee, during a shift change. Minutes later windows shattered as bullets were fired from a highway leading to the gate, with 60 to 75 workers reported armed nearby. State police dispatched 70 patrolmen with gas bombs to the trouble center.
The Seymour Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America holds a final rehearsal tonight at 8 at the Elks Club. The dinner meeting at 6:30 will include installation of new officers and a post dismissal dance with Johnny Otte Orchestra.
Harry M. Palmer announces the Liberty Bell reception committee for Seymour’s Liberty Bell Day next Tuesday June 27. A 7 45 pm meeting at city hall will plan local celebration with possible state committee presence.
The Senate approved a 15 day stop-gap extension of the draft law to midnight Friday. The measure, approved by voice vote, extends the deadline to July 9 at the request of Senate Democratic Leader Lucas of Illinois. The House has already passed a bill extending the selective service.
Sen ator Gillette said Senate investigators will probe alleged huge expenditures in at least four senatorial primaries in North Carolina Florida Pennsylvania and Illinois. He chairs the privileges and elections subcommittee tasked with policing this year's 36 Senate races. He noted numerous written and personal complaints but did not disclose details.
Ed Griffith Seymour sanitary officer today warned residents to keep garbage cans tightly closed. City Ordinance 1139 imposes a fine of 25 dollars for leaving garbage in open containers.
The 14th National Air Races were cancelled for 1950 by the event’s executive committee. The Labor Day weekend spectacle, which drew about 200 000 spectators last year, was halted, apparently due to Defense Secretary Louis Johnson’s refusal to allow military planes to participate.
A potential nationwide rail tieup emerged as switchmen unions set a Sunday strike date against five major lines. Two more unions gain legal strike eligibility on July 15. Rock Island and Western Pacific warned they would halt service if the switchmen walk out. The AFL Switchmen's Union rejected a presidential board wage and hour plan issued April 19, triggering a 30 day cooling off period since May 19.
Career diplomat John S. Service testified publicly that he resisted domination of China by Communism and denied aiding the Chinese Communists as Senator McCarthy alleged. He appeared before the Senate foreign relations subcommittee investigating accusations of Communist influence in the State Department.
Bloomington Indiana June 22 Dr Goethe Link an Indianapolis physician and amateur astronomer was elected Patron of the Society by the American Astronomical Society Wednesday. He has given Indiana University an observatory he built in Morgan County near Brooklyn.
At a Washington news conference President Truman announced Charles Spofford of New York will be the American deputy on the North Atlantic Treaty Council a key post in defending the west Spofford 47 served in the Army civil affairs section in the Mediterranean during the war and rose to brigadier general He also praised European efforts such as the European Payments Union and the French plan to pool coal and steel production Truman said he would vote straight Democratic in Ohio and predicted a Democratic senator this fall He noted Spofford’s appointment and mentioned ongoing air force expansion from 48 to 70 groups heading to page 6 column 6
Judge Norval K. Harris of Sullivan Circuit Court begins a 60 day service in the Indiana state farm cattle barn after a contempt sentence. He was fingerprinted photographed and fed with other inmates. Superintendent Albert Ellis said the duty is temporary pending aptitude study and may lead to a pro tem appointment by Sullivan County officials.
In Paris, Lena Horne and MGM director Lennie Hayton, a white man, wed secretly in 1947. Manager Ralph Harris announced the marriage, saying the pair kept it private for professional reasons and now reveal it. Hayton won an Academy Award for On the Town. Horne performs in Paris and plans a July tour of England and Belgium.
