A Salem man faces reckless homicide charges after a fatal accident at a dynamite plant. The incident prompted immediate investigations and details remain under police scrutiny as legal proceedings begin.
Emmett Si Hattabaugh 41 of Wallonia Washington county died after a jeep driven by Giddings 33 of exes Chim witch overturned on State Road 135 pulling a boat trailer. Giddings faces two counts reckless homicide and operating under the influence. arraigned not guilty with $1 000 bond. Funeral Tuesday Salem Baptist Church burial Salem Cemetery. Deputy coroner inquest pending.
State Road 250 reopened Saturday after repairs on a bridge about three miles west of Uniontown. Nine six inch I-beams supporting the bridge floor were replaced and a new floor installed to fix damage reported June 7. C. E. Bruce, sub-district maintenance superintendent of the Seymour district, led the project.
A Jackson county woman seeks a good home for her unborn child asking a financially stable family to assume care. She cites parental differences but says the baby has a good background and prefers placement with a responsible family over an orphanage.
Two men faced arraignment in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown before Judge George H. Gossman and Roger D. Baird. Baird pleaded not guilty to knowingly uttering a forged check for 10.18 dollars, arrested by Seymour state police on a filing by Amos N. Gerth. Tyler pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, fined 50 dollars plus costs, license suspended 90 days. Robert Allen pleaded guilty to public intoxication and was fined 1 dollar plus costs. He rode with Tyler when arrested near Road 31 50 east of Seymour. Andrew P. Sharon’s case, formerly charged with public intoxication, was filed in circuit court. James Maples pleaded guilty to drunk driving, fined 50 dollars, license suspended 90 days, arrested near the junction east of Seymour.
An undetermined number of chickens were killed when a northbound Glen Whitaker truck loaded with fowl met a southbound truck on the second of three bridges on U S 31 about six miles southeast of Seymour. The other truck did not stop, sideswiped Whitaker, and forced his rig into the bridge. Damages to the truck about 150 dollars and to the bridge and chickens about 100 dollars in total.
Mrs. Vada Goforth of Indianapolis paid last respects in Louisville Sunday to Lt. James Goforth nephew of the late Edward Goforth. Lt. Goforth, 23, son of Mr and Mrs John Goforth of Louisville, was killed on Saipan in World War II and his funeral was to be held today. John Goforth formerly lived in Seymour while with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Cc M Beldon 76 former Jackson county surveyor died Saturday in Noblesville after months of illness. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 PM in Noblesville Cemetery with burial there. Survived by widow Ella Fleenor, son Jerry of Broad Ripple, brother Bruce of Fruita, nephew J Floyd in Seymour. daughter Lucille predeceased.

A large explosion at the Hercules Powder Company dynamite plant in Kenvil New Jersey killed three men and damaged three buildings. The blast, felt over a 50 mile radius, occurred about 12 45 p m local time in the nitro glycerine area. State police closed highways near the plant and a spokesman warned of possible additional injuries.
The Supreme Court refused to interfere with a lower court ruling upholding the Taft Hartley Labor Law provision requiring union officers to swear they are not Communists. The court did not decide on the law's ban on union political spending. It also affirmed the ruling upholding union registration and financial reporting to the secretary of labor.
A parking survey in Seymour was under way today by the Indiana state highway commission with the U S Bureau of Public Roads. Interviewers asked motorists where trips started where downtown went and the trip purpose with questions to those inside and outside the meter area.
