City and county schools anticipate changes as the state raises the qualifying tax rate from 15 cents to 29 cents per $100 of property value. State board figures show aid linked to units per school and teacher salaries, with reimbursement adjusted by the new rate. Page 2, column 5.
The Rev W Teasley of City Methodist Church Seymour Indiana is named as official delegate to the World Methodist Convocation Evangelism June 26 to 28 in Philadelphia. Joseph H Edge says delegates from across the country will represent every church ministry and lay group.
John M. Lewis of this city will speak at the Seymour Rotary Club weekly dinner at 6 15 Monday night at the Elks Home. W C Baldwin chairs the program, the final Rotary meeting before Officers Night when new officers for 1953 54 are inducted.
Seymour plans representation at a Public Service Commission hearing in Columbus to oppose abandoning daily passenger trains between Indianapolis and Jeffersonville. Franklin Columbus Edinburg and Jeffersonville are among others opposing the move which would consolidate trains and end two intrastate runs.
Robert Persinger of Brownstown and Mark Bush of Wallonia returned home from Hoosier Boys State week conducted by American Legion Post No. 112 Brownstown. Both are to be seniors this fall with Persinger at Brownstown Consolidated High School and Bush at Walonia High School. The event was held at the Indiana School for the Deaf near the State fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
One hundred thirty eight readers joined the Vacation Reading Club at the Public Library, with 444 registered in the first five days. Sixty players have read at least one book, 29 readers have completed ten books to earn a diploma, and the club aims for 500 memberships with 450 diplomas during its eight week run.
An X-ray unit will tour multiple Seymour sites from Monday to Friday as part of a three week county wide chest X-ray survey sponsored by the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association. All students 15 or older at Shields High School are urged to participate and return results to the school health record.
Harold Dale McKinney 18 of Clearspring escaped serious harm after his 1952 sedan left the road on a left curve about 2 miles east of Kurtz. A blown left front tire caused loss of control and a tree impact left the door open and the dash loose. McKinney suffered bruises to his right arm hip and leg and was to see a local doctor.
The office of Dr. C. E. Gillespie will be closed from June 21 through July 5 for an extended break. Patients with urgent needs should contact alternate arrangements as posted by the clinic.

Miss Melvina Keith 62 lifelong Cana area resident died Friday night at her Crothersville R2 home after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 PM at Cana Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Moseley officiating. Burial follows in Cana Cemetery. She was born September 28 1890 in Jennings County to Allen and Henrietta Bridges Keith and is survived by two brothers George and William Keith plus several nieces and nephews.
John Horace Henry Blankenship 77 longtime Jackson county resident died Friday at his daughter Addie Henson’s home near Brownstown after a long illness. The Brownstown Baptist Church service followed a 2 pm Monday funeral at the church. Burial was in Brownstown Cemetery. Kovener Funeral Home Crothersville arranging. Survived by seven children, a brother and a sister.
Fred H. Fehring 65 Columbus businessman and member of a pioneer manufacturing family died Friday at his home 813 Washington St. He had been ill months. Fehring Carriage Co director of American Security Co and Citizens Building and Loan Assn. He belonged to St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Survivors include his widow Florence Spurgeon Fehring, a sister in Columbus and three nephews. Funeral plans unavailable.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed at Sing Sing Prison Ossining New York for passing atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. They did not speak in the electric chair as crowds gathered in cities abroad and supporters protested elsewhere. The pair died shortly before sunset, ending the first espionage related U S executions of non military convicts.
A heat wave covers Seymour and surrounding areas with Indiana and much of the nation sweltering. Official readings show a high of 96 degrees and a low of 63 as spring ends and summer begins. Terre Haute tops state highs at 100, while Evansville 99 and Indianapolis 97.
Four students from Jackson county joined 1,304 scholars named distinguished for the second semester of 1952-53 at Purdue University. Eligibility requires a grade point index of 5 or better. a perfect 6 average is only possible with top marks in every subject. Jackson county names include Seymour Wesley Eggerman Jr., Joan Robertson, Joan Evelyn Rogers, and Janet Sue Peters with home economics and air transportation engineering among their programs.
Homer V. Winn Seymour Chamber of Commerce manager left Friday for Chapel Hill North Carolina home of North Carolina University to attend the South eastern Institute of Chamber of Commerce executives. The institute opens tonight and runs through Saturday June 27. Winn graduated from a 1946 Chicago institute and has attended several Southwest programs.
The Reds massed about 16 000 fresh troops along the East Central front in the week as part of the great Communist offensive. The U S Eighth Army report notes heavy Allied air losses, with 19 Sabre jets shot down behind enemy lines and 14 aircraft lost to anti aircraft fire. UN warplanes bombed Communist positions in record waves to stem the drive that dented South Korean lines by up to two miles.
Indiana Governor George N. Craig proclaimed July 4 as National Day of Prayer following a request by the Indiana Junior Chamber of Commerce. He urged prayers for national and international regeneration and for the United States to lead the world to peace.
The Korean conflict talks at Panmunjom split after President Rhee's move to free 26 000 anti Red prisoners and demand freedom for 9 000 more. The Reds and Allies traded sharp letters as the truce delegation recessed the meeting indefinitely awaiting reply.
N Craig will ask Adj Gen H A Doherty to study using Camp Atterbury for National Guard summer camps after Army closure next year. The 38th Infantry Division now trains at Camp Grayling Midh while Atterbury was reactivated post Korea. Army plan closes Atterbury by June 30 1954 in an economy move. Doherty calls Atterbury a very feasible site for Guard camps.
Hallie Bryant of Indianapolis Attucks faced a threatening note from a gambler claiming a $5,000 bet on Kentucky and promising harm if he played in the Indiana Kentucky all star game. Bryant refused to bow to the menace and played with a police guard assigned for safety. The threat warned Bryant not to play and warned of injury to him or his family if he did.
