Authorities found Ella Mitchell 43 of Seymour dead from drowning in White River near Columbus. No foul play is suspected as Lt. Harry McMillin Detective Wayne Tolbert and Officer Oliver Leighton recovered the body with Sheriff Richard Thayer nearby on Monday afternoon.
A New Harmony excursion capped the Hoosier Historical Institute summer program under Dr. Ross F. Lockridge of Indiana University. Local students visited landmarks such as the Raintree Pageant Parade, Rapp-Maclure Place, Say Tomb, Footprint Rock, Rappite Fort Granary, and the Rappite Cemetery, with evening campfire and square dancing. The Sunday tour included church services and the Pageant of Golden Raintree.
Members of the grand jury of the present term of Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown continued in session today. The grand jury adjourned about 3 30 yesterday to report back this morning to continue deliberations and inspect the Jackson county jail and county home. Witnesses were called and heard in Monday's session. Foreman Roscoe W. Hague leads the panel with J H Dorsey George H Hart Victor Hackman Ray Clouse and Earl T Skinner.
The Jackson County Chapter of the American Red Cross holds its annual board meeting at 8 o clock in the Red Cross office. Reports from committees will be discussed and seven directors plus officers will be elected or reelected. Named incumbents include Louis Wetzel, Stanley Owen, Orville Mann, Cleo Hartley, Don Mills Bollinger, Henry Bobb, with Home Service policy to be approved. The Home Service committee is Karl Hackman, Mrs. Aletha Applewhite, and Rev. John A. Phelps.
The Prairie Farmer Radio Station in Chicago donated a Simmons all purpose bed with fracture equipment overhead framework and pulleys to Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital. Hospital administrator Ralph W Keyes said the bed can be adjusted by the patient and is valued at over $200.
Amateur shows for youths eight to nineteen return this summer at Shields Park shelter house. The city park board sponsors five weekly contests beginning July 13 at 7 30 pm with cash prizes totaling 150 50 for first place and smaller awards for other winners._ENTITIES: Shields Park, El lis L. Gerald Hobbs of Crothersville faced a motor vehicle under the influence charge as his case neared jury consideration in Jackson Circuit Court. Key state witnesses included Sgt. Forrest Brewer Lt. Harry McMillin and Technician Harold E. Chambers after evidence concluded around noon. Raymond E. Sorrell of Indianapolis pleaded guilty to operating under the influence and was fined 50 dollars plus 12.55 in costs with a 90 day license suspension recommended by Judge George H. Gossman for the incident east of Seymour on U S Route 50 early Sunday.
Final rehearsals for Seymour Chapter of DeMolay prepare the Initiatory and DeMolay degrees for a new chapter to be formed in North Vernon. The institution ceremony occurs Thursday at 7 30 PM in the North Vernon High School gym with Seymour Chapter officers and visiting DeMolay and Masonic officials present.
City police pursue a continuing investigation into the poisoning of five dogs in Seymour's northeastern section. Reported Monday afternoon, all five dogs are believed to have died from poison, with officers seeking the person responsible.
Physicians from Jackson County and Indiana attend the ninety ninth annual American Medical Association session in San Francisco June 26 30. Five Hoosier doctors invited to present papers. more than 100 Hoosier physicians among 10000 doctors at the convention.
Seymour sends two staff members and six campers to the Columbus Youth Camp as it opens its fourteenth season Sunday with 60 girls checked in for the first week. Camp director is Miss Jean Smith. staff include Miss Joan Pearsey and Miss Beth Ann Ogan.

Clarence E. Spurgeon, Browns Town businessman, will be installed Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Indiana in a ceremony at 119 East Ohio street Indianapolis on Saturday at 3 o clock DST. He will lead 185 subordinate lodges and chair the Indiana Home board at Lafayette, succeeding Joseph V. Van Briggle who served the past year. Other officers named include Louis E. Starken Plainfield Elton L. Marquart Fort Wayne Reuben L. Robertson Indianapolis Henry Kammerer Logansport and Guy Harris.
Clerk Treasurer Ralph J. Lucas forecast a quiet session for tonight's semi monthly city council meeting at 7 30 in the city building. No ordinances are pending.
Vienna reports Hungary offers to swap imprisoned American businessman Robert Vogeler for the Crown of St. Stephen seen as miraculously powerful. Negotiations indicate Vogeler, jailed for spying and sabotage since February, could be released within weeks as the crown's return is the demand.
Irvin Shelton 18, son of Mrs. Blanche Maddex Smith and Archie Shelton, plans entrance to Wilberforce College to study for the ministry. A Shields High School graduate, he spoke before the Bethel A M E Church Sunday and was granted a license. He will appear before the district conference committee in Lafayette Indiana to join the Richmond annual conference. He is active as Sunday School superintendent and is the eighth Seymour Church minister in 76 years.
In Auburn Indiana on June 20 a New York Central train system gave Julian Willford a round trip ride when his stalled automobile on the tracks was struck by a westbound passenger train. Willford escaped as the engine propelled the car forward and a second train then stopped the wreckage. The flying engine crashed on U S 6, was struck by a truck, and knocked down a utility pole.
At the Seymourine Club dinner, Francis J. Birge presided as a technicolor film on life at the U S Naval Academy was shown. He highlighted a national ad promoting freedom symbols and urged preservation of the liberty Americans have enjoyed for over 150 years.
Hollywood reports Judy Garland cut her throat in a distress flare. Studio aide Ralph Wheelwright said the wound was not serious after a tense discussion at Garland's Sunset Boulevard home with her husband Vincent Minelli, manager Carlton Alsop, and secretary Myrtle Tully.
Former US ambassador to China Patrick J. Hurley was invited by Senate investigators to testify about charges that State Department officials shielded those who sold or gave top secret documents to pro Communist elements. The 1945 Amerasia case is under review by a Senate foreign relations subcommittee led by Chairman Tydings.
Jimmy Knauss, age 6, disappeared Monday afternoon after playing near railroad tracks. Coast Guardsmen located his body in Lake Michigan 50 feet beyond a pier after an all-night search involving over 100 police, neighbors, and reporters.
The British freighter Indian Enterprise exploded and sank in the Red Sea about 300 miles south of Suez. Only one of 73 crew members survived, an Indian seaman rescued by the Norwegian tanker H Westfal Larsen. The ship carried 580 tons of explosives and was en route from London to Indian ports.
Indianapolis June 20 The list of Democratic state convention candidates grows. State Auditor James M. Propst of Terre Haute seeks renomination, the second state official to enter after Secretary of State Charles F. Fleming. Benjamin E. Buente of Evansville a former Superior Court judge aims for the first district supreme court seat. Charles C. Price Notre Dame professor posts 1200 fee for senator nomination. Rep Andrew Jacobs of Indianapolis and Alex Campbell of Fort Wayne join the race.
Indictments charging murder were returned against three Indianapolis men for the June 10 killing of Albert M. Thayer, an Indianapolis lawyer. Prosecutor Campbell will seek the death penalty for Carroll Dooley while recommending mercy for James Chalfin and Earl Kelly due to youth. the men face first degree murder and murder in the course of a robbery. Thayer was beaten and choked to death, body found near the Marion Hamilton county line after their car link to an earlier accident in Springfield Missouri.
Secretary of State Acheson told governors the State Department is a good clean loyal outfit. He said no worries about his associates and noted quiet efforts to weed out possible subversives from wartime agencies. He urged apostles of democracy to aid backward nations and referenced Truman’s Point Four program.
In Miami on June 20 a widening hunt surrounds 15 Americans missing since June 9 when their DC-3 vanished near Venezuela’s coast. The Coast Guard launched air sea rescue operations and asked the Caracas embassy attache to assist. The plane, owned by New Tribes Mission of Chico California, departed Miami June 9 and refueled at Kingston before reporting 25 miles from Maracaibo at 6 p.m. that day. Mrs Donna Wetherald, wife of pilot Capt Ben Wetherald, noted the State Department would seek further action.
Four persons were found dead in a small airplane wreckage seven miles south of Lebanon Indiana. The deceased include Robert A. Lahr a 25 year old Lafayette flying instructor Clinton Edward Ferguson 30 of Battle Ground student pilot Mrs Marcia Ferguson 30 and her son Ronald Partridge eight. The plane apparently crashed silently Monday night near a farmer who heard nothing. The craft had flown from Baer Field Fort Wayne at 10 pm after Lahr gave Ferguson flying lessons and had stopped in Fort Wayne for a drill with the Indiana Air National Guard.
