N. J. Lasher Seymour city school superintendent told the Seymour Lions Club that the 1943 budget will require about $6,000 more than 1942 and likely raise the tax levy by nine to ten cents. He compared operating costs, noted the state tax plan’s misallocation, and described school finances including salaries and budget structure.
A joint Seymour Chapter No 85 and Scottsburg Chapter Royal Arch Masons meeting at the Masonic Temple West Second Street conferred the Most Excellent Masters degree on six candidates six from Seymour and Scottsburg. E W Sargeant directed the work with about fifty masons present a lunch and fellowship followed Byron L Judd serves as High Priest of Seymour Chapter.
Jason George Crane a former Seymour resident and telephony authority died Thursday at his home in Kansas City from a heart attack at sixty two. He built a career with more than thirty telephone firms and was vice president of Theodore Gary & Company. Survived by wife Margaret Sheron a son Allen and two grandchildren. funeral arrangements not known.
Tommy Kutch and Bernard Head Jr. depart Saturday for the Indiana Boys State at Indianapolis. Kutch is sent by Seymour Post No. 89 American Legion, Head by Seymour Aerie Eagles, joining a citizenship training program for high school youths.
Air raid wardens are ordered to a full turnout at 7 30 tonight in the basement of the Seymour National Bank building for the weekly session. Ben H Hoffmeier, county air raid warden instructor, announced the plan and said they will receive their books tonight.
New York dispatch reports Madeline Webb a 28 year old Stillwater Oklahoma model was sentenced to life imprisonment for her part in the murder of Susan Flora Reich a wealthy Polish refugee.
Plunkett urged all residents to observe National Treasure Hunt Day on Saturday and Sunday. Officials asked citizens to collect every piece of old rubber from homes and turn it into the national campaign, down to jar rubbers and small scraps.
William Ewing age about fifty five a former resident of Vallonia was found dead in bed Wednesday morning in Dayton Ohio. He lived in Vallonia for years and worked as a clerk in the Smith drug store there. He left Vallonia to serve in World War I and did not return to reside there. He was unmarried. A sister Mrs Ella Regula of Oakland California survives and funeral arrangements are pending awaiting her arrival in Dayton. Mrs James Bland of Browns Town is an aunt of the late Mr Ewing.
The Indianapolis Board of Trade paid 4871.68 in back wages to 44 employees in Indiana. Wage and Hour Division director Thomas O Malley said overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act was not previously paid. Recipients included grain inspectors clerical staff elevator operators janitors and maintenance workers. No legal action was taken.
Plans for a house to house rubber canvass in Seymour's national collection drive were finalized after a meeting of representatives from several organizations. Austin E. Wilson, named city salvage chairman, proposed that every home and business be contacted to gather all rubber items. Air raid wardens will coordinate local calls and a truck collection will follow.
Indiana Republicans, led by Chairman Ralph Gates, finalize an 11 candidate slate for the November election at the state convention. Only the secretary of state race drew protracted opposition, with James M. Knapp withdrawing to back Rue J. Alexander, signaling a landslide in the party’s nominations.
A. H. Ahlbrand of Seymour was reelected financial secretary of the Missouri Lutheran Synod district convention meeting at Fort Wayne this week. Five officers were reelected and directors named include Behrman Indianapolis Lothmann Louisville and Carl Gerken Napoleon. A business session was to conclude the convention today.
The Swedish motorship Gripsholm left New York carrying 1,097 Japanese and Thai nationals from the western hemisphere for exchange in neutral territory for American officials and newspapermen held in Asia. It will stop at Rio de Janeiro to pick up 403 more Japanese from Brazil and Paraguay before heading to Lourenco Marques in Portuguese East Africa.
Indiana State Police will cooperate with the scrap rubber drive to inventory and survey all scrap rubber from owners dealers and private individuals. Patrolmen and local officers will aid county salvage chairmen in protecting piles at filling stations and bulk plants while auto firms are urged to use caution and diligence.
Allied airmen described four days of raids that sank fifteen Japanese ships and set twenty plus aflame during the Coral Sea fight. Lieutenants Hargan and Campbell were credited with the first blow. Captain Roberts spotted the enemy fleet. A carrier identified as Ryuku was sunk in five minutes as bombers struck and many transports, cruisers, and destroyers fell back or fled northward.
A list of former Seymour and Jackson county teachers named to Indianapolis public schools for the 1942 43 term was approved by the Board of School Commissioners on recommendation of Superintendent DeWitt Morgan. Notables include H G Knight as principal of School 34 and Lena Quinn teaching second grade at School 29.
In Michigan City Local 290 of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen meets to accept or reject a temporary Aug 16 agreement allowing nearly 1000 Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing workers to return Monday. The deal, brokered with the company and Federal Conciliator Robert H. Pilkington, hinges on union ratification amid prior army orders threats and wage dispute context.
Herman McMinds of Columbus was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a crash on U S 31 near the Harold Hall residence southeast of Seymour. He is in Jackson county jail Brownstown with a $500 bond set by Judge John C Branaman. His car allegedly struck Helen S Carter as she turned into a driveway at the Hall home.
About twenty workers have not yet reported but $730 has been turned in to treasurer C. G. Steinwedel. Officials expect to reach the $750 goal. Capt. Bram Stevens and N. J. Lasher, chairman, thank all contributors and workers for their splendid cooperation in the campaign.
