County Begins Wheat Harvest Looks Good Across Jackson County

First loads entered Davis Feed and Grain in Seymour and Farm Bureau Co op and Helwig Grain Elevator in Cortland show the 1977 harvest starting. Purdue notes Spring conditions good, with Indiana winter wheat projected at about 50 million bushels, near 10th highest on record, amid lower prices and strong yields in some fields.

Dry spell raises farmers’ caution in Jackson County

County grain elevator managers report anxious farmers amid a dryer than normal June with about 2.5 inches below the monthly average after nine dry days. Some fields are spotty while others have adequate rain, and forecasters predict heavy showers this weekend as a cold front passes.

Father Son Hurt In Accident At Halfway Bridge

Lawrenceburg man Earl R Justis and his son Gordon C Justis were injured when their pick up and camper flipped on U S 50 at the Halfway Bridge after the driver reportedly dozed. The 14 year old was freed from the wreckage. Damage was about 6000 dollars. Both were treated locally.

Sentencing Set For Ball In Triple Murder Case

Mikey Steven Ball, 25, of Indianapolis, was found guilty by a Madison Jefferson Circuit Court jury on three counts of second degree murder for the Dec 28 1975 shotgun slayings of Steven Nichter Ricky Burke and Eugene Lillico. The six man six woman jury recommended three life terms. Sentencing tentatively slated for June 23 by Judge Joseph L Hensley follows a three week trial with a pre sentence investigation underway. Ball faced trial after venue change from Hamilton Circuit Court Noblesville.

Space Shuttle Enterprise Piggyback Flight Scrubbed at Edwards

Engineers tuned the Space Shuttle Enterprise guidance and its four computers for a piggyback flight on a Boeing 747 at Edwards Air Force Base California. The mission was postponed after a computer malfunction and hatch restraint issues delayed takeoff.

Fire destroys vehicle and damages homes in city

Firefighters from Station Two answered at 4 25 a m to Steve Gilley at 713 West Eighth Street discovering a 1972 station wagon fully engulfed. The car was destroyed and smoke damaged a nearby residence and shed. A separate fire at 203 South Park Drive caused smoke from a space heater short in wiring.

Jackson County to Hear $140000 Revenue Sharing Funding Plan

Jackson County commissioners schedule a public hearing Monday at 9 a.m. at the courthouse to consider a $140,000 federal revenue sharing appropriation. Plans include $114,000 for highway bituminous materials, $12,000 for a jail roof and engineering, $12,000 for courthouse furnace and engineering, and $2,000 for mosquito control. They will also open bids for reflective traffic signs funded by federal state and county sources.

Revitalization Of Aging Group Discussed Here

A Seymour Community Center meeting led by Tom Ross focused on reviving the Jackson County Council on Aging formed in 1975. Citizens plan to recruit representatives from Seymour Wallonia Brownstown Medora Crothersville and Freetown to rebuild the council and set priorities including housing nutrition transportation telephone reassurance and health services.

Re-Enactment At Corydon Draws Indiana Legislators

About 200 spectators watched a Friday re-enactment of the first Indiana General Assembly on Corydon courthouse square. The event featured 42 legislators including Rep. Thomas W. Hall and Sen. James W. Spurgeon. Sen. W. Richard Miller complained of high official salaries, noting $1,000 for the governor and $700 for the three supreme court justices.

Galloway Named President of Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents

Dr Conrad Galloway superintendent of Seymour Community Schools is elected president of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents for this year. He will lead a 16 member executive committee and preside over three to four annual meetings while guiding efforts to improve educational administration and student opportunities in Indiana.
