Jackson County may face another summer of mosquito borne encephalitis unless the public cleans mosquito breeding sites. County physicians sanitarian Robert Gatte and three county commissioners briefed reporters at Schneck Memorial Hospital.

Lake Reopens For Fishing After Weed Spraying

Starve Hollow Lake near Wallonia reopens to fishing this morning after Tuesday’s closure for lake weed management. Camping remains open and boats are available for rides. Health officials note rising encephalitis cases in nearby counties and urge reducing stagnant water sources to cut mosquito breeding.

Burglars broke into Fenton's Grocery at 110 East Sixth Street before 6:15 this morning. Owner Oscar Fenton of 813 West Sixth Street reports cigarettes and some change stolen. Police investigating.

Weather Records and Break-In at Seymour Store

Downtown Seymour weather notes show a 7 a.m. reading with a future sunset time and sunrise on Saturday. Police report a break-in at a store where intruders entered through a small rear window, leaving 12 cartons of cigarettes and a cigar-box refill, with no clear suspect as neighbors noted a familiar dog in residence.

Final expenses filed by three primary candidates

The last of the May 4 primary candidates filed campaign expense reports this morning with Loyd Jones, clerk of Jackson Circuit Court. Robert Gaiter reported 397.93 dollars, Waldo Terkhorn 567.44, and Joseph Corcoran 1466.57, bringing total primary expenses to 10195.33 dollars and all receipts on file for three years.

Americans urged to leave Lebanon after ambassador's assassination

Brownstown FFA leads in state threefold national bid

Brownstown Central FFA becomes first Indiana chapter to qualify for national contest in three areas for two straight years at the 47th Indiana FFA Convention at Purdue. The chapter earned top honors in safety and BOAC plus an additional state title in agriculture processing and dairy production with several members advancing to the national meet in Kansas City. Crothersville and Seymour also won awards as Jackson County participants.

In Lawrence Circuit Court judge H Wayne Baker to hear continuing testimony from the state in the murder case of Robert Paul Jones a Columbus man charged with three counts of first degree murder for the Pauls Cafe slayings. A longtime friend testified Jones spoke of wanting to shoot someone he disliked and avenge a wrong.

Parent Aide Program Seeks Volunteers in Jackson County

The Tribune reports a Parent Aide program launching next week in Jackson County. A general meeting occurs at 7 30 p m Thursday in the R H Ludwig Building with July training sessions and ongoing weekly visits by volunteer Aides to assist families with abused or neglected children, focusing on mothering rather than child substitution.
