Secretary of State Dulles told newsmen after a National Security Council meeting that Seoul's release of thousands of anti Communist prisoners of war violated United Nations Command authority. He spoke following talks with President Eisenhower on the Korean crisis.
A 15 year old Scottsburg youth John Robert Marlott died in a collision involving a truck driven by 16 year old Roger Deckard and an automobile driven by Steven Buck on State Road 58 near the county road intersection six miles northeast of Bedford. Hart Marlett, the truck driver, also died while Buck and Maryann McPike were uninjured. Marlott, visiting Heltonville, would have been a Scottsburg High sophomore next fall. He is survived by two brothers and a sister, plus his paternal grandmother in Medora. Funeral arrangements are pending.
South Korea under Syngman Rhee acts to free about 25,000 anti‑truce Korean prisoners and enroll them in its army. About 1,500 inmates escape a prison near Inchon and clash with U S forces as unofficial reports claim casualties. The action unsettles UN Command allies and raises questions about the armistice prospects.
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod adopted a goal of at least 120 new missions per year in North and South America. The 42nd triennial convention in Houston also directed studies to assist rural churches and urban congregations. Delegates Rev. W. A. Mack and Paul Otting, from Immanuel Jackson and Bartholomew counties, attended, with Dr. John W. Behnken reelected as president.
Frank D. Cofield Shields High School instrumental music instructor presided over a meeting of the executive board of the Indiana School Music Association at McCormicks Creek State Park. Cofield serves as the association president this year and the session runs today through Friday and Saturday morning.
Harold Darage, 20, of Brownstown, was thrown from a driverless car which then struck a store belonging to Ansel Roush in Tampico. He was cited for excessive speed on a curve and must appear in Seymour justice court. The car hit a garage door and damaged the feed platform flooring.
Funeral services were held for Luther E. Thompson, brother of Mrs. Nelle Chatham of Plymouth and Mrs. Essie Murphin of Crothersville, from Plymouth Methodist Church. A former Austin resident, he suffered a February heart attack and died after a brief hospitalization and return home under care. Survivors: son Gates Thompson of Plymouth, daughter Helen Syler of Argos, two sisters, and seven grandchildren, with wife Etta Thompson and two children previously deceased.
Roy E. Pafenberg of Owen township has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain in the U S Army Signal Corps. He is one of four Pafenberg sons serving in the armed forces and has 13 years of service. He spent two years at Fort Meade near Washington D C after a year in Korea and 50 months in the Pacific during World War II, where he was wounded at Leyte and later cited at Manila. He recently received orders to go to San Juan Puerto Rico for a three year tour, with his wife and three children. He began National Guard duty in 1940 while a Purdue student.
Robert Lucas was installed as commander of Seymour Post No. 89, American Legion, in ceremony at the Legion Home. William O Neal of Indianapolis spoke as department service officer, denouncing critics of veterans hospital benefits and noting surveys that support veterans’ proper use of benefits.
A load of nearly 300 bushels of new winter oats arrived at the Hoosier Elevator on North Chestnut Street this morning. The oats, gathered by Gilbert Wischmeier north of Tampico, are high quality and suggest an unusually good harvest ahead for Jackson County.
Martial law spread to Potsdam and Babelsberg as unrest and anti Communist riots widen from East Berlin. Reports say 23 to 38 killed across six cities, with a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the two suburbs and rioting along the Berlin West Germany corridor in Magdeburg Chemitz Dresden Leipzig and others.
Miss Doris Jeane Lyons daughter of Mrs. S. M. Lyons and the late Mr. Lyons of this city, graduated from Norton Memorial Infirmary School of Nursing in Louisville. Commencement was held Tuesday night at Christ Church Cathedral. She is a 1949 Shields High School graduate.
Mr and Mrs J Floyd Beldon and Mr and Mrs T I Sparks depart for Gary Indiana for the Indiana Elks Association annual convention. Beldon serves as state association trustee while Sparks sits on the state ritualistic committee. James F Deputy exalted ruler of Seymour Lodge 462 travels with Don Decker winner of the boys division in the Indiana Elks Youth Achievement Contest. Decker will receive the state award at the convention with the amount announced then. The convention ends with a Sunday morning business session.
Pupils taking free swimming lessons from 1 to 2 pm at Shields Park may stay in the pool Friday afternoon after the lesson. Joe D. Gill, pool manager, announced that Friday is the last day for the lessons and parents may call for children at any time. Attendance this week totaled 196 Monday 219 Tuesday and 204 Wednesday. The adult class with 24 students meets three nights this week and next with potential group divisions after.
FBI agents captured Carl F. Sullivan 22, an Air Force deserter from Moody AFB Valdosta Ga. He had been living with his mother in Deputy Ind and working as a farm hand in Jackson County. After learning agents were pursuing him he traveled by taxicab to Seymour then bus to Danville Ind. He alighted in Indianapolis where he was arrested.

August 9 Presbyterian Church Rev Mr Taylor. August 16 Baptist Church Rev Mr Granger. August 23 Christian Church Rev Mr Norris. August 30 Methodist Church Mr Dulin. Rev Taylor spoke on opening Sunday at Presbyterian Church.
