Arraignment Delayed for Man Charged with Assault
Joseph H Lawrence 51 of Scottsburg RI faced assault and battery with intent charges in Jackson Circuit Court. The arraignment was postponed as he sought attorney consultation. Police said he was also accused of attempting to molest a 9 year old girl and a 7 year old boy in Seymour before being linked to public intoxication. He has prior DUI convictions and recently left Putnamville state prison.

Eleven Jackson county youths participated in the 1957 Indiana Boys State at Indiana University. Brownstown sent six delegates and Seymour five. The program ran June 8 to 13 with daily schedules of flag ceremonies, lectures, county schools, and elective tracks in law police speech and journalism. Governor Reed Stewart and Lieutenant Governor Berry Coleman were elected, and Jim McCoy of Princeton received the Graham Award. Sponsored by the American Legion, Boys State aims to teach democracy by active government participation.

Two convicted burglars who escaped from the Indiana Reformatory last midnight were recaptured about two hours later at the east edge of Indianapolis. State police picked up Thomas M. Stiles, 23, Martinsville, and James E. Perry, 24, Indianapolis, in a car they had stolen from a parking lot at the Reformatory. The two were caught as they drove north on Ind. 100 at 30th street.
