Seven Thousand Four Hundred Dollars In Accidents
State police investigated five traffic accidents Wednesday in Jackson County causing 7400 dollars in damage. Dwight A. Kay 61 of New Albany suffered facial cuts when his state vehicle rear ended a semi on Interstate 65 near mile marker 53 at 11 p m. The truck had rear damage while the station wagon’s front hood roof and fender were damaged. The state police did not estimate damage on the truck. A Medora man’s pickup was damaged about 3500 dollars in a one vehicle crash on County Road 350S seven miles west of Medora at 9 45 p m. Lowell E Speer of Medora was westbound when his truck left the road and went over an embankment. He allegedly left the scene but was later identified by the Medora town marshal. A Seymour man escaped injury when he missed a turn on County Road 875N and drove through a fence. Trooper Richey reported Keith H Hackman 16 of Seymour R7 was southbound about five miles west of Col. 5.

REMC Rate Increase Approved For Jackson County
The Public Service Commission approved a $405,000 rate increase for Jackson County Rural Electric Membership Corporation. Residential customers using about 1,000 kilowatt hours monthly will see bills rise by $2.58, from $29.39 to $33.74, beginning with the July 31 billing. The base rate hike reflects fuel adjustments now included in the base rate, trimming the fuel charge on the bill accordingly.

Windows Damaged Dowtown in South Chestnut Street
Early Wednesday morning considerable damage occurred to windows of several businesses in the 200 block of South Chestnut Street. Ross Ambulance Service at 229 South Chestnut reported two large showroom windows knocked out, about $1,200 in damage, with glass being replaced. Larrison's Sandwich Shop at 200 South Chestnut reported a four by five foot window knocked out by a trash container left for public convenience. several other establishments in the block were affected.

Civic Requests Receive Works Board Approval
Seymour board of public works and safety met briefly in city hall and approved several civic requests and sewer connections. The board accepted fundraising efforts by Freetown Development Committee for the Fourth of July Queen contest and granted parade, bake sale, and kiddie ride permissions to local groups. Eleven sewer connections were approved for properties including Park Gardens and Snyde Acres. Walter VonFange received a captain promotion in the fire department, and a 15 cent per mile vehicle allowance for city employees was approved. Notting’s Super Valu Foods plans an office building and parking lot.

Vernon Township trustees appoint Garrison to board
David Garrison was named to the Metropolitan School District of Vernon Township board at the June meeting, replacing Tom Hall who resigned in April. Outgoing superintendent Robert Gingher retired after eight years, to be replaced by Dr. Robert L. Boyd on July 1. Boyd and his family are moving into the Bethany area near Crothersville. The board toured facilities with Joe Hall, and will reconvene July 6 for maintenance talks and reorganization. Final reports on activities and summer contracts for staff and programs were approved, with two resignations accepted from English teacher Mrs. Tom Rumple and fourth grade teacher Mrs. Janet Nehrt.

In Lansing Michigan a police officer was fatally shot while blocking a getaway car during a bank holdup that trapped hostages. A bank employee was wounded, another suspect in fair condition, and three Indiana men were arrested. The officer Mac Donnelly aged 35 was reported dead at Sparrow Hospital.

Two sedans collided Wednesday afternoon causing minor property damage. A four year old passenger, John T Rebber of 1101 South Poplar Street, sustained an abrasion and knee bruise. Police reported no serious injuries.

Libraries To Get Funds In Indiana
State Representative Thomas W. Hall announced eligible libraries for state funds under a new law. Brownstown Public Library receives 494.68, Seymour Public Library 3,665.85, and Jackson County Contractual Library 1,431.56. Beef Sign-up Deadline Friday for July Referendum
Jackson County 95 beef producers have registered to vote in the July beef referendum. Registration closes Friday at 4 30 p m at the ASCS office in Brownstown. Eligible voters are those who produced beef in 1976. If approved by two thirds of voters in July the plan would tax cattle sales 30 cents per $100 to fund beef research and a new beef board to strengthen markets and communications.
