Rainfall measured at 0.33 inch eased the heat in the area while forecasts call for clearing skies and cooler temps tonight. A fatal crash near Seymour on U S 50 cited wet pavement as a factor in Lola E. Leatherman's death.
The Seymour board of public works met to review bids and requests. A 1976 fully equipped city dump truck bid from John Bottorff Ford, Inc. was referred to the city attorney after a trade-in allowance of 2,978.40 reduced the total bid to 11,848.40. The board approved six sewer connections and discussed special sewer bill credits for elderly well-water users. Separate reports noted funnel clouds causing injuries and damage in Kokomo, flooding in Houston, and weather-related power outages.
Tom G. Voss, president of The Seymour National Bank, was elected vice president of the Indiana Bankers Association during the organization's annual convention at the French Lick Sheraton Hotel. William C. Farrell, Jr., presided.

A 65 year old woman, Lola E Leatherman, died in a two vehicle crash on U S 50 about 2.5 miles west of Seymour in rainy conditions. Her car crossed the center line into a semi-trailer truck operated by Roland R Nicholson of Columbus. Coroner Keith Burkholder ruled accidental death from a ruptured heart. Vehicle damage estimated at 5000 dollars. no injuries reported for the truck driver. Funeral plans to be announced.
A Seymour woman was beaten and left by the road after refusing sexual acts. Three Columbus area youths, Kenneth R. Collins 21 Ricky D. Collins 22 and Donald E. Brown 20 of Jewell Village near Columbus, were jailed after a traffic stop about 15 minutes later on Jackson County Road 5408 near the Tampico fire station. The woman is in satisfactory condition with broken ribs and bruises.
In Lawrence Circuit Court at Bedford, Jerry Martin and Nancy Coffman testified Tuesday about the November 9 shooting at Paul’s Cafe in Columbus. Prosecutors say Robert Paul Jones 32 used a black 32 caliber revolver to kill Tybith Campbell James Malone and Leslie Crum during the cafe attack.
Jackson County officials consider buying an old house across from the courthouse for a youth center to keep juveniles in county care rather than sending them to boys and girls schools and regional services. Volunteers Connie Hehman and Larry Spurgeon push for the project, citing long term costs and better local supervision amid state cost estimates for a new facility.
Eighteen small Indiana branch post offices may close, with several in Jackson and Jennings counties studied for possible shutdowns. Dowell says closures depend on alternative service options and customer feedback.
