About 900 Jackson county World War veterans are to receive roughly 450000 in bonus payments issued as $50 bonds with odd amount checks. Post offices will stay open late to distribute letters, with most recipients cashing bonds to fuel local trade.
Thomas Hughes, 43, a New York butler, faced an intoxicated driving charge while reportedly still possessing a $1,480 bonus. Details continued on page 2.
About a dozen World War I veterans at a local gathering described how they would spend their bonus funds. Respondents cited plans to pay debts, buy furniture and appliances, remodel homes, or invest in property, with some mentioning savings or future purchases. One veteran even hinted at entering a new business with part of the money.
The Jackson County Historical Society will obtain state markers to designate historic sites and guide visitors, to be erected along highways at county expense. The annual meeting at the county historical museum in the Jackson County State Forest near Brownstown elected officers with R A Cox named president and other officers chosen for the year.
Seymour council of the Junior Order of the United American Mechanics returned from the annual picnic at Tiffin Ohio as winner of a radio prize for the council traveling the greatest distance. Tiffin lies 280 miles from Seymour and the event drew over 1 200 home attendees and 10 000 total visitors including Daughters of America members.
Gerrill Wayt of Freetown, Civilian Conservation Corps member at Kurtz, was injured Saturday morning when he fell from an automobile between Kurtz and Freetown. He is reported as doing as well as could be expected at Fort Benjamin Harrison Hospital in Indianapolis, after earlier reports he had died from a fractured skull.
The Seymour Rotary Club heard brief talks by Rev. Sam Hill of Louisville Kentucky and Jay C. Smith of Lakeland Florida on the need for a well rounded life. Hill named devotion work play and worship as essential parts of a complete life for personal and community value. Smith noted Lakeland Rotary and local citrus production while expressing pleasure at visiting Seymour.
Five truck drivers were arrested on US Route 31 in Crothersville by Officers Frank B. Gray and Robert Gorman of the Seymour state police post. Three faced charges for overweight trucks while other drivers were cited for motor vehicle violations. William Talley of Louisville was identified as a Kroger Grocery driver involved in the incident.
A two wheeled pyramid shaped advertising trailer owned by Dr. W L Ball was burned in an alley behind the Rialto Theater on East Second Street about 3 50 pm Monday. Fire started from a spark from an ash bin. Seymour fire department extinguished the blaze with booster tank. tires burned off and the framework badly charred.
Mr. Smith, Lakeland Florida publisher and ex publisher of The Seymour Daily Tribune, spoke briefly at the Seymour Rotary Club meeting at noon today. He was one of the charter members of the local Rotary Club.
Jefferson County Masons invite five lodges and their families to a June 24 rally at Nevil le s Grove nine miles northwest of Madison. Thomas J. Wilson former circuit judge at Corvind en and new grand master of Masons of Indiana will be principal speaker. Monk and Sam WHAS entertainers from Louisville headline the all day event with more music planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cosby of 224 Carter Boulevard faced choking fumes from an electric refrigerator pouring from doors and windows at about 2 15 this afternoon. Seymour firemen could not enter due to lack of masks. the house was aired to clear fumes. The cause remained unknown and a Persian cat upstairs was presumed dead.
Indianapolis June 16 Samuel Jackson of Fort Wayne as permanent Chairman opened the Indiana Democratic state convention urging unity to oppose a re endorsement of wealth. He warned Republicans would crush humane aims if they win and mocked the GOP for past defeats while praising the McNutt and Van Nuys administrations.
Andrew David fifteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Arthur David of Columbus died after being struck by an automobile driven by Lewis Davis of Hope. The collision left him fatally injured today.
In New Orleans jurors from a long running case indicting friends of Huey P Long asked Attorney General Homer Cummings to release Joseph Fisher from Atlanta prison. They charged discrimination and questioned why prosecutions were abandoned while noting other defendants had not faced trial.
Indiana Democrats at the state convention in Indianapolis nominated M. Clifford Townsend of Marion for governor on the first ballot after his two rivals withdrew. Townsend led with 90,414 votes as 19 counties still voted, while Kirk McKinney and Viras Greenlee withdrew and urged acclamation. The platform pledged to retain the gross income tax with some corrections and praised Roosevelt and McNutt. Greenlee and McKinney ran against Townsend, backed by different party factions, as delegates and electors were selected.
