Time Issue Explained In ICC Report

The ICC moved the Eastern Standard Time zone line westward into Indiana and Kentucky following a five year old refer endum. Indiana counties in the eastern third plus Marion County and Jefferson County in Kentucky joined EST while 17 Hoosier counties remained on Central Standard Time. The 1956 vote favored central time, influencing the ICC decision and a future boundary mostly north to south across Indiana.

Seymour Community Schools Trustees Sign Contracts

School trustees signed contracts with new teachers and bus drivers at the June board meeting in the administration building. They discussed renaming Shields High School to Shields Junior High, approved a class gift concrete walk with a commemorative plate, and named the 1961-62 staff including Charles W. Asmus mathematics teacher and Judith Schmidt elementary teacher. Salary adjustments for custodians and secretaries were voted.

Rain totals over two inches in Seymour area

Shivers of blackberry winter hit Seymour as thunderstorms dumped 2.10 inches of rain overnight. Winds cooled lows to the 40s with 48 degrees in the morning and rivers rising in White River at Rockford. Rain totals across Southern Indiana topped 2 inches in several towns.

Judge Halts Intervention In School Case

U S District Judge Oren R. Lewis rejected the Kennedy bid to let the federal government enter as a plaintiff in the Prince Edward County desegregation dispute. Lewis said intervention would delay rights and noted contrasting federal actions in Little Rock and New Orleans.

Free Diving Lessons At Seymour Pool

Qualified swimmers at Seymour Municipal Swimming Pool in Shields Park receive free diving lessons each Wednesday at 5 p m. Joe D. Gill, pool manager, announced. Robert Terry of Seymour teaches the classes. he has guided divers at the local pool for three years. Instruction continues each Wednesday afternoon through the 1961 season.

REA Grants Largest Loan To Hoosier Cooperative

The Rural Electrification Administration announced a 60.2 million dollar loan to Hoosier Cooperative Energy Inc of Osgood Indiana to build a 198000 kilowatt plant near Petersburg and a 1552 mile transmission network for 16 co ops serving 44 counties and 72700 farms. The plan aims to save about 5.5 million over ten years while providing power to 72 thousand rural customers. Members include Bartholemew Daviess Martin Decatur Dubois Fayette Union Harrison Johnson Knox Morgan Orange Rush Shelby Southeastern Southern Sullivan Utilities District and Wayne with Butler Electric Co operative of Hamilton Ohio also listed.

Jury awards 12000 in Medora traffic death case

Mary E. Shoults the special administratrix for Bert H. Shoults estate won 12000 in Jackson Circuit Court against Don Richard Stuckwisch and others after a three day trial. Shoults was killed in a two car crash on April 19 1959 on U S 50 near Medora. Reynolds and Anderson were injured. Stuckwisch was fined for reckless driving and license suspension was recommended.

Tractors Proposal for Prisoners Drives Castro Talks

AP reports Castro proposes trading 1127 to 1200 prisoners for farm tractors.
