Weekend Heat Breaks Records as Storms Threaten North Indy

A hot humid weekend with temperatures reaching 92 in the area ended with forecasts of possible severe thunderstorms for the northern third of Indiana, while Jackson County may see rain and thundershowers starting Tuesday. In Chicago area tornadoes killed two and injured 23 as drivers faced flooding and looting incidents followed by gunfire.

Fire damages Crothersville apartment house on West Howard

A fire gutted a five unit apartment building on West Howard street in Crothersville Saturday evening causing extensive fire smoke and water damage. No residents were injured but owner Mary Murray of a nearby dime store was treated for shock and firefighter Mike Nehrt sustained a foot wound. Over 40 firefighters from multiple departments battled the blaze for two hours and investigators are examining the cause.

May arrests rise in Seymour police report

Seymour police report shows increases in both adult and juvenile arrests in May. Adults total 65 criminal charges plus 8 more than April. juveniles 29 charges up 24 from April. Traffic arrests: adults 64 with 22 speeding and other offenses. juveniles 7 with a few traffic violations. City recorded 74 traffic accidents, property loss $57,637, up from April by $14,129.

Coulter Faces DUI Charge in Fatal Crash

Donald R. Coulter of Brownstown appeared in Jackson County Court on a preliminary hearing for driving while under the influence second offense in connection with the death of his son Richard L. Coulter, 18, who died from head injuries when a 1971 station wagon overturned on U S 50 near the Jackson-Lawrence County line.

Vallonia Lake Closes Briefly For Spraying

Starve Hollow Lake near Vallonia will close to swimming all day Tuesday and to fishing Tuesday through Friday morning for lake weed management. Lake officials say spraying will kill algae and weeds that hinder recreation. Camping stays open and boat rentals continue during the shutdown.

Crothersville held its second annual Bicentennial Red White and Blue Festival with a parade at 5 p m featuring 50 units. Cub Scout Pack 722 won best overall for a teepee themed float.

Seymour High School Majorette Leaders for 1976 77

Linda Romine is head majorette with Katie Shields as assistant and Kim Tirey as feature twirler after May 27 tryouts. The three led the nine chosen majorettes at Seymour High School for the 1976 77 season.

Crothersville Board Okays Three Small Appropriations

The Crothersville Town Board approved 800 for street lights 1322 for garbage and trash collection and 500 for promotional town board meeting attendance. A weed removal ordinance was passed on its readings with penalties and cost billing. The board discussed mosquito control and planned budget funding for fogging equipment. The next meetings are set for July 7 and the first and third Wednesdays thereafter.

Trial Opens in 3 Count First Degree Murder Case

The murder trial of Robert Paul Jones 32 of Columbus began at 9 a m in Lawrence Circuit Court Bedford with judge instruction and opening arguments. A 12 member jury plus two alternates was seated to hear charges including shooting three people at Pauls Cafe in Columbus last November.
